SXU Football Falls to NCAA D-III No. 22 UW-Whitewater, 37-0

CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University football team (0-2, 0-0 MSFA Midwest) lost its home opener to NCAA Division III and No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 37-0 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Senior linebacker Terry Elias Jr. (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) recorded a team-high nine tackles (six solos), along with 2.0 tackles for loss for nine yards and a sack for six yards. On the offensive side of the ball, senior wide receiver Marquel Porter (Calumet Park, Ill./DuPage/Richards) did a little bit of everything as he rushed for 44 yards on 10 carries, caught a 19-yard pass and was 2-for-9 passing for three yards and an interception as he started the second half under center.
  • Redshirt freshman quarter back Barah Abad (Chicago, Ill./Quincy/Taft) started the first half, going 7-for-13 for 37 yards with an interception. He also had two rushes for one yard.
  • Senior running back Tyreese Lee (Chicago, Ill./Moraine Valley/Eisenhower) and junior running back Jacob Fisher (Medora, Ill./Southwestern) each finished with nine rushing yards, respectively. Lee did so on four carries, while Fisher had three rushing attempts.
  • Redshirt junior wide receiver Mario Price (Chicago Heights, Ill./Calumet New Tech) caught two passes for 16 yards. He amassed 109 return yards on three attempts, including a 68-yard return in the first quarter.
  • Sophomore punter Ayden Sheppard (Spring Grove, Ill./Grant Community) punted four times for 175 yards, averaging 43.8 yards per punt. He booted a long of 57 yards and had one punt land inside the 20-yard line.
  • Redshirt sophomore defensive back Cam Manney (Chicago, Ill./Curie) registered eight tackles (four solos), as did senior linebacker Chris Swayne (LaSalle, Ill./LaSalle-Peru Township) (three solos) and redshirt freshman defensive back Tai Sesta (Joliet, Ill./Roosevelt/Joliet Catholic Academy (seven solos).
  • Senior defensive lineman Justin Yeazell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) came away with six tackles (three solos) and a quarterback hurry.
  • Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman David Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) also made six stops (three solos) with a tackle for loss for three yards.
  • The Warhawks took a 7-0 lead with 2:50 to play in the first quarter, scoring on a 32-yard catch and run that ended an eight-play, 54-yard drive.
  • UWW added 17 points in the second period, first on a 52-yard field goal that capped an 11-play, 42-yard drive with 6:00 minutes left, on a 28-yard touchdown pass at the 2:12 mark, and an eight-yard quarterback keeper with :50 remaining, to go into halftime with a 24-0 advantage.
  • Wisconsin-Whitewater booted a 33-yard field goal midway through the third frame to go up 27-0
  • The Warhawks went 99 yards on 14 plays, using 6:17 off the game clock to extend their lead to 34-0 with 13:53 left in regulation. They kicked a 34-yard field goal at the 6:20 mark of the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Saint Xavier (0-2/0-0 MSFA Midwest) returns to Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field to take on Madonna University in a Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover matchup on Saturday, September 20. The game is set for a 6:00 pm start in Chicago, Ill.
