Mlynarski Nets Game-Winner in 1-0 Win for SXU over IUN

CHICAGO – Freshman midfielder Kajetan Mlynarski (Warsaw, Poland/Lelewel) scored his first collegiate goal, the lone tally, in a 1-0 triumph for the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (6-8-1/2-2-1 CCAC) over Indiana University Northwest in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Tuesday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Mlynarski, who entered the game as the team leader in assists, struck the game-winning goal from just over 30 yards out into the right corner past the diving goalkeeper in the 63rd minute. Both teams finished the game with 14 shot attempts and five saves.
  • Redshirt senior goalkeeper Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) recorded his third clean sheet of the season, making four saves.
  • Mlynarski totaled two shot attempts, one shot on goal, in 79 minutes of play.
  • Fifth-year senior forward Dorian Mahone (Carol Stream, Ill./Willowbrook) led the Cougars with a match-high four shot attempts and two shots on goal in 73 minutes on the pitch.
  • Senior forward Mark Vitaliy Hul (Ternopil, Ukraine/TSSH No. 29) had two shot attempts with one on goal, along with his first assist of the season in 86 minutes of action.
  • Redshirt senior midfielder Mauri Martinez (Chicago, Ill./Argo Community) also picked up an assist, his second of the year, in 56 of playing time.
  • SXU had a pair of scoring opportunities in the first half, with a narrow 5-4 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.
  • On the winning goal, Martinez sent a pass towards the middle of the field that was settled down by Hul, who fed a touch pass to Mlynarski to convert the winning tally.
  • Martinez faced a flurry of chances in the eight minutes as the RedHawks pressed for the equalizer with seven shot attempts. He made a diving stop in the 86th minute to keep IUN off the board. Martinez made three of his four saves during that stretch.
Saint Xavier (6-8-1/2-2-1 CCAC) makes the trip to Notre Dame, Ind. to take on Holy Cross College (Ind.) in a CCAC contest on Saturday, October 24. The match is set for a 6:00 pm central start.
