Bradenton, Fla. – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (1-3/0-0 CCAC) concluded its four-game series with New College of Florida Sunday morning at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., suffering a 3-2 defeat. Freshman infielder
Trevor Corbett (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) finished 1-for-3 at the plated with a two-run single, a walk and a stolen base. Senior pitcher
Thomas Plizga (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Fremd) made the start, taking the loss after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing four hits, three earned runs, a walk and posting one strikeout.
- Senior outfielder Ryan O'Farrell (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) collected a hit in two official at-bats, along with a hit-by-pitch and a run scored.
- Freshman pinch-hitter Kaleb Navarro (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) recorded his first collegiate hit with a double in the top of the 7th.
- Junior pitcher Richard Gomez (Chicago, Ill./Parkland/Concordia/St. Laurence) debuted for the Cougars out of the bullpen, logging 1.2 innings with three hits, two walks and a strikeout.
- Senior pitcher Nick Krueger (Clifton, Ill./Danville Area/Clifton Central) made his second appearance of the young season, tossing 1.0 inning of relief with a strikeout.
- NCF took the lead in the bottom of the 1st on a sacrifice fly and an RBI base hit.
- Corbett tied the game in the top of the 3rd with a two-run single.
- The Mighty Banyans plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 4th off of an RBI single.
- SXU put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the 7th on Navarro's double, however he was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a pitch in the dirt.
Saint Xavier (1-3/0-0 CCAC) travels to Point Lookout, Mo. to play College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Friday, February 5 on the first day of the Battle in the Hills Tournament. The game is set for a 6:00 pm start.
