Parker Violett (Maple Park, Ill./Kaneland) collected four RBI, two in each game, to help lead Saint Xavier University baseball (5-5/0-0 CCAC) to a doubleheader sweep of University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis (Mo.) Friday afternoon in Alton, Ill. Violett drove in two runs and junior infielder
John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) had three hits and three stolen bases to aid senior pitcher
Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive), who threw a complete game in a 7-2 win in game one. Violett smacked a two-run double in a four-run first inning, and junior pitcher
Cole Martz (Huntington, Ind./Kankakee/Huntington North) earned his first win as a Cougar in an 8-0 triumph in game two.
Game One:
- Violett finished 1-for-2 with a run scored, a walk and a stolen base.
- Simecek was 3-for-3 overall, scoring twice and tying his career-high for steals.
- Junior infielder Max Waszkiewicz (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) had two hits in three at-bats with an RBI.
- Senior outfielder Ryan O'Farrell (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Senior pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) threw all 7.0 innings for his first collegiate complete game to improve to 1-0 on the bump. He scattered four hits with two earned runs and four strikeouts.
- SXU rallied for four runs in the top of the 2nd. O'Farrell lined an RBI single, Waszkiewicz had an RBI base hit, a run scored on a wild pitch and senior infielder Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) drove in a run on an RBI groundout.
- The Eutectics came back with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a pair of RBI doubles.
- A wild pitch brough in run for Saint Xavier in the top of the 5th, and Violett belted a two-run single back up the middle in the top of the 7th before Markezich worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th to lock up the win.
Game Two:
- O'Farrell went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
- Violett doubled in four trips to the plate
- Freshman infielder Trevor Corbett (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) was 1-for-2 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
- Waszkiewicz had no official at-bat as he drew two walks and he was hit-by-pitch, while adding two steals and scoring a run.
- Junior pitcher Cole Martz (Huntington, Ind./Kankakee/Huntington North) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just three hits, two walks and striking out four batters to move to 1-1.
- Graduate student pitcher Carter Kopp (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) worked 1.0 inning of relief, giving up a hit.
- In the top of the 1st, a run scored off an error, Violett hammered a two-run double to the gap in left center and freshman designated hitter Kaleb Navarro (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) lifted a sacrifice fly.
- Corbett sliced a two-run single through the right side of the infield to extend the lead to 6-0 in the top of the 4th.
- Freshman pinch hitter Lucas Petersen (Olympia, Wash./Capital) capped the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the 7th.
Saint Xavier (5-5/0-0 CCAC) concludes its series with UHSP with a doubleheader on Sunday, February 15 in Alton, Ill. Game one is scheduled for an 11:00 am first pitch.
