Crane Swipes Record; No. 23 SXU Softball Top No. 11 Midland

Davenport, Iowa – In game one of their split doubleheader at the St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Dome Tournament in Davenport, Iowa, the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball (2-2/0-0 CCAC) upset No. 11 Midland University (Neb.) with junior catcher Natalie Johnson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Grand Valley State/Bradley-Bourbonnais) driving in two runs and junior pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) tossing a two-hitter in a 4-1 victory. Game two, a 9-1 triumph over Clarke Univesity (Iowa) in six innings saw senior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) establish a new single-game stolen base record for the Cougars, swiping seven bases, one shy of the NAIA record of eight set by Isis Morris of former NAIA school Allen University (S.C.) on April 15, 2019. Crane is now tied for No. 2 in the NAIA record books with Lyla Blauser, who had seven stolen bases for Union Commonwealth University (Ky.) on March 27, 2004. Crane finished with nine stolen bases on the day, as she had two in game one, bringing her season total to 16 on 17 attempts in just six games.

Game One:
  • Johnson was 2-for-2 overall, adding a run and drawing a walk.
  • Crane went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk as well.
  • Strand went the distance, throwing seven innings with an unearned run, five walks and five strikeouts.
  • Senior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) gave Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st with a sacrifice fly that scored Crane.
  • In the bottom of the 2nd, sophomore outfielder Isabelle Poortenga (Dyer, Ind./Lewis/Lake Central) added another sac fly and junior infielder Yalayzah Lovan (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) drew a bases loaded walk as a pinch hitter.
  • Johnson lined an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the 3rd to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • The Warriors tallied a run in the top of the 4th off of a sacrifice fly.
Game Two:
  • The Cougars also set the single-game team stolen base record, coming away with 14, breaking the mark of 10 set last season on May 4, 2025.
  • Crane finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a walk.
  • Junior designated player Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) collected three hits in four at-bats with three stolen bases and two runs.
  • Matlock was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a steal.
  • Redshirt sophomore infielder Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Taft) hit an RBI double, going 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Freshman infielder Sienna Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) hit her first collegiate triple as she was 1-for-3 overall with a run and a steal.
  • Antkiewicz's elder sister, sophomore pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) fired a one-hitter across 6.0 innings of work for the win (1-1) with one earned run, six walks and five strikeouts.
  • Senior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) gave SXU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI groundout.
  • A double steal by Wroble and Crane, who stole home, an RBI double by Casas and a sac fly off the bat of Johnson pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the 4th, Crane legged out an infield single than promptly stole second, third and home to make it 5-0.
  • The Pride drove in a run in the top of the 5th on an RBI single
  • Sophomore infielder Danielle Goodman (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) lined an RBI single to center, Sienna Antkiewicz smacked an RBI triple and stole home, and Matlock sliced an RBI single to cap the scoring the bottom of the 6th.
No. 23 Saint Xavier (4-2/0-0 CCAC) returns to Iowa, however they travel to the Northwest corner of the Hawkeye State to take part in the two-day American State Bank (ASB) Sports Complex Softball Classic hosted by Dordt University (Iowa) starting on Friday, February 20. The Cougars play Doane University (Neb.) at 12:00 pm and No. 17 Northwestern College (Iowa) at 2:00 pm.
