No. 23 SXU Softball Tosses No-Hitter, Splits DH in Iowa

Sioux Center, Iowa – Sophomore pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) and junior pitcher Hailey Wesner (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) combined to throw a no-hitter in an 8-0 victory in six innings for No. 23 Saint Xavier University softball (5-3/0-0 CCAC) over Doane University (Neb.) in game one of their split doubleheader Friday afternoon at the American State Bank (ASB) Sports Complex Softball Classic hosted by Dordt University (Iowa) in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Cougars lost to No. 17 Northwestern College (Iowa) in the second game as senior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) had an RBI and a stolen base.

Antkiewicz threw 5.0 innings with a season-high eight strikeouts and issuing five walks. Wesner worked a 1-2-3 top of the 6th, getting a pair of lineouts and a pop out. It's the first no-hitter for SXU since Antkiewicz tossed a 5.0 inning no-hitter in an 8-0 win vs. Viterbo University (Wis.) last season on April 12. It is the first combined no-hitter for Saint Xavier since February 18, 2024, when Julianne Claas (2022-25) and Laila Summers (2021-24) did so in a 9-2 triumph over Mount Marty University (S.D.).

Game One:
  • Sophomore infielder Danielle Goodman (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) was 3-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a run scored.
  • Redshirt sophomore infielder Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Taft) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a walk.
  • Sophomore outfielder Isabelle Poortenga (Dyer, Ind./Lewis/Lake Central) went 2-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.
  • Crane was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored
  • Junior infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) scored twice, with two steals and a pair of walks after going 0-for-2.
  • Crane scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the 1st.
  • Goodman lined an RBI single, another run scored on a fielder's choice, and Casas cracked a two-run double in the bottom of the 2nd for a 5-0 lead.
  • Poortenga hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • In the bottom of the 5th, Goodman drove in her second run of the game on an RBI single.
  • An error in the bottom of the 6th, that allowed Wroble to score, ended the game due to the eight-run rule.
Game Two:
  • Crane had a hit in four at-bats.
  • Wroble went 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
  • Junior catcher Natalie Johnson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Grand Valley State/Bradley-Bourbonnais) finished 1-for-3 with a double.
  • Goodman and Poortenga, each went 1-for-3 as well. Goodman also scored a run.
  • Junior pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) went the distance (2-2) after she logged 6.0 innings with four hits, three earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
  • A wild pitch gave the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.
  • Another wild pitch brought in a run to put Northwestern up 2-0 in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • Crane roped an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the 3rd.
  • NWC hit a sacrifice fly to plate a run in the bottom of the 6th.
No. 23 Saint Xavier (5-3/0-0 CCAC) wraps up play in the tournament on Saturday, February 21 when they take on Morningside University (Iowa) at 10:00 am, followed by a match-up with host Dordt at 12:00 pm in Sioux Center, Iowa.
