Johnson & Strand Guide No. 23 SXU Softball at Dordt Tournament

Sioux Center, Iowa – Junior catcher Natalie Johnson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Grand Valley State/Bradley-Bourbonnais) belted her second Grand Slam of the season and junior pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) earned the save in game one, followed by a complete game shutout in game two to help lead the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team (7-3/0-0 CCAC) to a pair of victories Saturday at the American State Bank (ASB) Sports Complex Softball Classic hosted by Dordt University (Iowa) in Sioux Center, Iowa. Behind Johnson's bat, the Cougars defeated Morningside University (Iowa) by a score of 8-2 in the morning. Strand logged three strikeouts to earn her third win (3-2) of the young campaign in a 1-0 triumph over the host Defenders in the afternoon.

Game One:
  • Johnson was 3-for-3, a triple shy of the cycle, with a walk.
  • Senior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Redshirt sophomore infielder Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Taft) scored two runs with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a steal after going 1-for-2 at the plate.
  • Senior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) also scored twice, adding two stolen bases and going 2-for-4.
  • Sophomore pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) came away with the win (3-1) after pitching 5.0 innings with six hits, two earned runs, two walks and a strikeout.
  • Strand picked up her first save of the year, working 2.0 innings of relief and retiring all batters she faced.
  • The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on an RBI double.
  • Sophomore infielder Danielle Goodman (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • Morningside went back up 2-1 in the top of the 5th with an RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the 5th, Casas tied the game when she scored on an error. Matlock gave SXU the lead on an RBI single and senior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) added to the advantage with an RBI groundout.
  • Johnson cracked her second home run of the season, extending the lead to 8-2, in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Two:
  • Crane was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Johnson finished 1-for-3 as well.
  • O'Connor had to official at-bat, drawing two walks and scoring a run.
  • Strand's final line: 7.0 innings, four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
  • Crane drove in the lone tally of the game when she sliced an RBI single to left field to bring in O'Connor.
  • In the bottom of the 6th, Strand gave up a lead-off double. The next batter put down a sac bunt to move the tying run to third. Strand go out of the jam by fielding a comeback groundball and getting a pop out.
  • Strand worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th, recording an assist on the final out.
No. 23 Saint Xavier (7-3/0-0 CCAC) is scheduled to play No. 5 Marian University (Ind.) in a doubleheader on Thursday, February 26 in Indianapolis, Ind. Game one is slated for a 2:00 pm central start.
