Joliet, Ill. – Senior outfielder
Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) went 6-for-8 on the afternoon, collecting four hits in a game one victory and adding two more in a setback in game two for the Saint Xavier University baseball team (16-10/7-5 CCAC) as they split a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with University of St. Francis (Ill.) to start a four-game series at Slammers Stadium Friday afternoon in Joliet, Ill. Zbrozek finished 4-for-5 from the leadoff spot with a run scored and senior pitcher
Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) tossed his second complete game of the season to improve to 4-1 on the mound this season in a 4-1 victory. Zbrozek led the Cougars, going 2-for-3, while junior pitcher
Cole Martz (Huntington, Ind./Kankakee/Huntington North) threw 5.1 innings with five strikeouts in a 3-0 loss in game two.
Game One:
- Junior outfielder Ben Meier (Beechwood, Ky./Lincoln Trail/Beechwood) collected two hits in four at-bats with an RBI, a run and a walk.
- Sophomore designated hitter Parker Violett (Maple Park, Ill./Kaneland) had an RBI single in four trips to the plate with a run scored and a walk.
- Senior infielder Beau Polickey (Oak Lawn, Ill./Heartland/Brother Rice) was 2-for-4.
- Markezich had a final line of 9.0 innings, five hits, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts.
- The Fighting Saints took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI base hit.
- SXU scored a pair of runs in the top of the 6th on a throwing error to go up 2-1.
- Meier drew a bases loaded walk to pick up his 16th RBI of the season in the top of the 7th.
- Violett lined an RBI single to center field to bring in Zbrozek in the top of the 8th.
Game Two:
- Junior infielder John Simecek (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Polickey, Meier and freshman infielder Trevor Corbett (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) each finished 1-for-3, respectively.
- Martz (2-2) allowed five hits, two earned runs and a walk.
- Senior pitcher Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) pitched 0.2 innings of relief, giving up one hit, one earned run and he walked two batters.
- USF smacked an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead on the bottom of the 1st.
- St. Francis added an RBI single in the bottom of the 5th and they drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 6th.
Saint Xavier (16-10/7-5 CCAC) hosts the Fighting Saints at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field to wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 pm in Chicago, Ill.
