Saint Xavier Wins Three of Four at Gulf Shore Tournament

Gulf Shores, Ala. – The Saint Xavier University softball team (11-7/0-0 CCAC) played four games at the Gulf Shores Tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala. over the weekend, coming away with three victories. On Friday, the Cougars lost to United States Sports University (Ala.) by a 10-1 decision in six innings with redshirt sophomore infielder Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Taft) collecting an RBI. In a split doubleheader on Saturday, Casas added two more RBI and sophomore pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) logged six strikeouts in a 6-1 win over Texas A&M University-San Antonio, followed by an 8-4 triumph, highlighted by a three-RBI performance by junior catcher Natalie Johnson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Grand Valley State/Bradley-Bourbonnais), over Campbellsville University (Ky.). SXU wrapped up the tournament with a 4-1 upset victory over No. 22 William Carey University (Miss.) with junior pitcher Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) scattering four hits with six strikeouts.

Game One:
  • Senior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) had two hits in three at-bats with two stolen bases and a run.
  • Casas finished 1-for-3.
  • Senior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) also went 1-for-3.
  • Junior infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) finished 1-for-3 as well with a steal.
  • Junior pitcher Hailey Wesner (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) made the start and took the loss (1-1) after throwing 1.2 innings with four hits, four runs (three earned) four walks and a strikeout.
  • Freshman pitcher Alaina Peetz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) made her collegiate debut, working 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two hits, three earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
  • Antkiewicz tossed the final 3.0 innings, surrendering five hits, three runs (two earned) and issuing a walk.
  • Casas drove in Crane on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 1st.
  • The Eagles responded with four runs in the top of the 2nd. They added three runs in the top of the 4th, a run in the top of the 5th and two more in the top of the 6th.
Game Two:
  • Casas singled in four trips to the plate with a run scored.
  • Crane swiped four bases after going 2-for-4 and scoring two runs.
  • Wroble was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, two runs, two walks and an RBI.
  • Senior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) went 2-for-2 with a run scored, a walk and a steal.
  • Freshman infielder Sienna Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) stole a base with a walk after going 0-for-1.
  • Payton Antkiewicz (5-2) fired a complete game, allowing just four hits, an earned run and a walk.
  • TAMSU broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the top of the 3rd.
  • Saint Xavier responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Casas lined a two-run single, O'Connor slashed and RBI base hit
  • Crane and Wroble put down consecutive RBI bunt singles in the bottom of the 4th.
  • Sophomore outfielder Natalie Gomez (Oak Forest, Ill./Lewis/Tinley Park) picked up her first RBI as a Cougar on an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Three:
  • Johnson was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4.
  • Matlock collected two hits in three at-bats with three runs scored, two stolen bases, an RBI and a walk.
  • Crane went 1-for-3 with two walks, a steal and a run.
  • Wroble drew two walks with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
  • O'Connor finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Casas was 2-for-4 as well with a run and a steal.
  • Strand (4-4) came away with a complete game, surrendering six hits, four earned runs, four walks and recording five strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
  • SXU plated three runs in the top of the 1st. Crane scored on an error, and Matlock and Johnson hit RBI singles.
  • Wroble scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 2nd, Johnson hammered a home run in the top of the 3rd and O'Connor drove in a run in the top of the 4th.
  • The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the 5th on a home run and a sacrifice fly.
  • Johnson smashed an RBI double in the top of the 6th.
  • Campbellsville hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Four:
  • Casas was 2-for-3 with a two-run double.
  • O'Connor finished 1-for-3 with a two-run double as well.
  • Matlock went 3-for-3 with a stolen base and a run.
  • Strand (5-4) had a final line score of 7.0 innings, an earned run and four walks.
  • The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on an RBI single.
  • Casas put Saint Xavier up 2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd on a two-run double.
  • O'Connor slugged a two-run double for some insurance in the bottom of the 6th.
Saint Xavier (11-7/0-0 CCAC) wraps up its Spring Trip with a doubleheader at No. 20 University of Mobile (Ala.) on Tuesday, March 10. Game one is slated for a 2:00 pm start.
