CHICAGO – Junior infielder/pitcher
Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) belted a home run in an 18-5 setback in game one, and he logged five strikeouts after taking the mound to start game two to earn the victory, a 7-2 triumph, as the Saint Xavier University baseball team (29-15/19-9) came away with a non-conference doubleheader split with Indiana University Kokomo Tuesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Dreier also doubled in the first game. In the second game, he pitched 4.1 innings with three hits, two earned runs and four walks to improve to 2-1 on the bump this season. The start of game two was delayed by nearly an hour as a thunderstorm rolled through the area.
Game One:
- Senior designated hitter Aaron Orzech (Streamwood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy), celebrating his birthday, connect for a home run to finish 1-for-3.
- Freshman infielder Trevor Corbett (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) doubled twice with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored, going 2-for-3.
- Redshirt freshman pitcher Ethan Godlewski (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) made his first collegiate start, lasting an inning after allowing nine hits, eight earned runs and a walk to take the loss (0-1).
- Senior pitcher Nick Krueger (Clifton, Ill./Danville Area/Clifton Central) worked 4.0 innings of relief, surrendering five hits, four earned runs and recording a strikeout.
- Freshman pitcher Owen Sanders (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) made his collegiate debut, throwing 1.1 innings, giving up five hits, six earned runs and posting a strikeout.
- Senior pitcher Osvaldo Ballesteros Jr. (Berwyn, Ill./St. Laurence) got the final two outs, with a hit allowed.
- The visiting Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the 1st. A two-run home run in the top of the 2nd and a solo home run in the top of the 4th put them up 10-0.
- In the bottom of the 4th, Corbett hit an RBI double that skipped over the third base bag, and he scored on an RBI double off the bat of junior outfielder Max Waszkiewicz (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South). Fifth-year senior catcher Max Archbold (Fort Myers, Fla./Olive Harvey/Fort Myers) drove in Waszkiewicz hit an RBI single.
- IU Kokomo added two runs in the top of the 5th on an RBI single and a double steal.
- Dreier launched his seventh home run of the season over the wall in left to make it 12-4 in the bottom of the 5th.
- Both teams traded home runs in the 6th inning, with Orzech clubbing his third of the year.
- IUK tacked on five runs in the top of the 7th.
Game Two:
- Sophomore outfielder Parker Violett (Maple Park, Ill./Kaneland) scored twice with two RBI, including a home run and a stolen base, going 1-for-3.
- Senior infielder Beau Polickey (Oak Lawn, Ill./Heartland/Brother Rice) tallied two RBI on a double, finishing 1-for-3 as well.
- Senior outfielder Shea Zbrozek (Bloomington, Ill./Danville Area/Normal Community) was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Senior pitcher Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) threw 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, giving up just one hit with a strikeout.
- Junior pitcher Richard Gomez (Chicago, Ill./Parkland/Concordia/St. Laurence) faced two batters with a walk and hit-by-pitch.
- Graduate student pitcher Carter Kopp (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Bishop James Mahoney) finished the game, working 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
- SXU rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 1st. Violett lined a two-run home run, his first of the season, Polickey sliced a two-run double, and Zbrozek was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
- The visiting Cougars got two runs back in the top of the 3rd on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
- Redshirt freshman pinch-hitter Jackson Michko (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) lifted a sac fly in the bottom of the 3rd.
- Orzech also hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 4th.
- In the top of the 6th with the bases loaded, Kopp came into the game and recorded a strikeout to halt IU Kokomo's momentum. He threw a 1-2-3 top of the 7th to secure the victory.
Saint Xavier (29-15/19-9 CCAC) plays Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a four-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) series to close out the regular season starting on Friday, April 24 in Palos Heights, Ill. in a doubleheader at 1:00 pm. They wrap up the series, celebrating 'Senior Day' at Ferrell Field on Saturday, April 25 with a doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
