Saint Xavier Softball Sweeps Series from Olivet Nazarene

CHICAGO – In a series that started last week on March 31, and the remaining games were twice postponed due to weather, the Saint Xavier University softball team (26-9/15-0 CCAC) swept Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Monday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. Last Tuesday, the Cougars came away with a 15-1 triumph, scoring 10 runs in the top of the 6th, in six innings in Bourbonnais, Ill. The win gave head coach Erin Mollohan her 300th victory as head coach at SXU, with three games played over the weekend, she now has a 305-115 record for a .726 winning percentage since taking over the program in 2017 after she served as an assistant coach from 2013-16 for Saint Xavier.

Concluding the series on Monday, sophomore designated player Isabelle Poortenga (Dyer, Ind./Lewis/Lake Central) recorded three RBI and Lily Strand (Evergreen Park, Ill./Saint Louis/Evergreen Park) logged her 11th complete game of the season in a 5-2 win in game one. Sophomore pitcher Payton Antkiewicz (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) tossed her first shutout of the year, allowing just two hits, and senior infielder Mallory O'Connor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Olivet Nazarene/Bishop McNamara) knocked in two runs in a 4-0 victory in the second contest.

Junior infielder Aubrey Wroble (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) reached a career milestone in the first game on Monday, becoming the 17th player in team history to collect 200 or more career hits. She joined senior outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) in hitting the 200-hit milestone, who did so Friday afternoon. Wroble added two more hits in game two, giving her 202 in her time with the Cougars. She is the program's all-time leader in batting average (min. 250 at-bats) with a .495 average (202-for-408).

Game One:
  • O'Connor was 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored and a double.
  • Sophomore infielder Danielle Goodman (Poplar Grove, Ill./North Boone) clubbed a home run, posting three RBI and was hit-by-pitch, going 1-for-3.
  • Wroble went 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Matlock finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a steal.
  • Senior catcher Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) had two hits in three at-bats with an RBI and a run.
  • Senior outfielder Fiona Crane (Evergreen Park, Ill./Northern Illinois/Mother McAuley) swiped two bases with an RBI and a run scored while going 1-for-4.
  • Strand threw a complete game, logging 6.0 innings with three hits, one earned run, two walks and eight strikeouts.
  • Redshirt sophomore infielder Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Taft) gave SXU a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st with an RBI single.
  • The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd with a home run over the wall in left center.
  • Goodman belted her third home run of the 2026 campaign, a two-run shot, to put Saint Xavier back on top, 3-1, in the top of the 4th.
  • Goodman picked up an RBI after a hit-by-pitch and sophomore outfielder Natalie Gomez (Oak Forest, Ill./Lewis/Tinley Park) drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 5th.
  • The Cougars rallied for 10 runs in the top of the 6th. O'Connor hit a two-run single, Poortenga drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Natanek sliced an RBI base hit, Crane added an RBI on a fielder's choice, Wroble legged out an RBI infield single, Matlock laced a two-run single and O'Connor book-ended the frame with another two-run base hit.
Game Two:
  • Wroble finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Poortenga was 2-for-3 overall with a double.
  • Strand (14-5) went the distance, throwing 7.0 innings and scattering five hits with two earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts.
  • ONU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a sacrifice fly.
  • Poortenga lined a bases-clearing three-run double to the gap in left center in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • Wroble's 200th career hit scored Crane, and Casas collected her team-leading 47th RBI of the year on a base hit back up the middle to extend the advantage to 5-1 in the bottom of the 5th.
  • Olivet Nazarene loaded the bases in the top of the 7th with two outs. A base hit brought in a run, however Crane ended the game when she threw out a runner at home.
Game Three:
  • O'Connor was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Poortenga had two hits in three trips to the plate with an RBI.
  • Wroble went 2-for-2 with a run.
  • Matlock logged two hits with a run scored and a steal, going 2-for-3.
  • Antkiewicz (10-3) walked eight batters with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.
  • In the bottom of the 3rd, O'Connor lined a two-run single back up the middle and Poortenga followed with an RBI single to left.
  • Wroble put down a sacrifice bunt, but an error allowed freshman pinch-runner Alex Tarala (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) to score from first base in the bottom of the 4th.
Saint Xavier (26-9/15-0 CCAC) begins a three-game series with Mount Mary University (Wis.) on Friday, April 10. The CCAC contest is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start. The series shifts to Milwaukee, Wis. with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 11.
