Dunbar W.V. – The Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (0-1/0-0 CCAC) lost its first match of the season by a 2-0 margin to No. 24 University of Rio Grande (Ohio) Thursday afternoon at the Shawnee Sports Complex in Dunbar W.V. in the first game of the Rio Grande Classic. Due to heavy rainfall over the past week, the matches were moved from the URG campus, which has a natural grass playing field, to the Shawnee Complex that has an artificial playing surface. Although the RedStorm held a 12-1 shot attempt advantage, only four shots made their way through the Cougar defense as redshirt senior goalkeeper
Daniel Martinez (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) collected a pair of saves.
- Junior midfielder/forward Eduardo Perez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) had the lone shot on goal for SXU in 16 minutes of playing time as a reserve.
- Rio Grande tallied the first goal of the match in the 21st minute and would carry the lead into halftime.
- An own goal by Saint Xavier in the 73rd minute capped the scoring.
Saint Xavier (0-1/0-0 CCAC) concludes play in the Rio Grande Classic with a match vs. No. 22 Grace College (Ind.) on Saturday, August 22. If the weather cooperates with no rain, the match will be played at URG, otherwise it will be held again at the Shawnee Sports Complex. Kickoff is slated for 10:00 am central time.
