The 2024 season will be the first season for Johnson as Defensive Coordinator. Before being elevated to the DC position, he served as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Cougars from 2019-2023.

Johnson played for SXU from 2017-18 and was named All-Mid States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League First Team his senior season. He started his collegiate career by playing two seasons for Culver-Stockton University (Mo.) from 2015-16.
