Tom Ryan is in his eighth season as head coach at Saint Xavier University, returning to his alma mater after playing for the Cougars in 2012.

In his seven seasons as head coach, Ryan guided the Cougars to a 157-47 record (.770). In that time, SXU has won six CCAC Tournament Championships, along with five CCAC Regular Season Titles, and have qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 & 2025. He guided Saint Xavier to a third-place finish in 2024 and a runner-up draw in the 2025 NAIA Men's Volleyball National Championship, earning NAIA Men's Volleyball Head Coach of the Year honors. The Cougars placed 11 NAIA All-Americans over this period: Aaron Kummer (2019 & 2021), Grant Ooms (2020 & 2021), Shane Ooms (2021), Joe Lock (2022), Oskar Krzyzk (2023), Jan Lopuch (2023 & 2024), Andres Velez (2024 & 2025), Caydann Cox (2025), Cameron Daniels (2025), Drew Ehlers (2025) and Matt Pennala (2025), with Pennala winning 2025 NAIA Men's Volleyball Player of the Year.

Ryan received CCAC Coach of the Year honors in 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024 & 2025. 

Ryan comes to Saint Xavier after coaching one season (2018) at the NCAA Division I level, working with Quincy University (Ill.) as a graduate assistant. He also has served various coaching roles at Prairie State College (Ill.), Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.) and at UNO Volleyball Club prior to his time at Quincy.

Ryan is a 2014 graduate of Saint Xavier University, and currently resides in Midlothian, Ill.
