CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University Esports teams have played well in Great Lakes Esports Conference (GLEC) competition, sporting a 10-5 record against their conference foes. At the midway point of the Fall portion of the schedule, the Cougars have a cumulative record of 19-20. Valorant is off to a hot start, holding a 6-1 overall record and is 5-0 in GLEC play. Rocket League is 8-8 so far and League of Legends is 2-2 with a 1-2 conference record. Overwatch is 1-3 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU) sits at 2-6 with a 3-1 record in the GLEC.
Rocket League:
- Rocket League has a lineup of 'Orc' senior Peyton Benes (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), 'IamDJ6' freshman Gabriel Krueger (Bolingbrook, Ill./Homeschool) and 'Toast' sophomore Marcos Nunez (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community). The Trio lost to Lubbock Christian University (Texas) on September 18 with a 3-0 set back (0-5, 1-2 & 1-6).
- They competed in the CRL East Qualifier No. 1 on September 24 and defeated University of Kentucky and Florida Gulf Coast University, respectively, by scores of 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament. They lost to No. 26 Oakland University (Mich.) by a 2-0 margin before rebounding for a 2-0 win over College of DuPage (Ill.). SXU was eliminated by University of Tennessee, falling 3-0.
- Saint Xavier took down Kansas State University 3-1 in their best-of-five matchup on September 25. The Cougars won game one 4-3 and the Wildcats evened the match with a 3-2 win in the second game. SXU pulled away for the win with a 2-1 victory in game three and a 3-2 triumph in game four.
- The Cougars took part in the CRL East Qualifier No. 2 on October 1. They topped Michigan State University (Mich.) with a 2-1 win in the double-elimination tournament. Saint Xavier lost to No. 26 Oakland 2-0 and were eliminated by Tennessee 2-0.
- SXU faced No. 13 St. Clair College (Ontario) but suffered a 3-0 setback (0-5, 2-3 & 1-4).
Overwatch:
- The Overwatch team for the Cougars featured the five-person lineup of 'alphabet' sophomore William Barquero Roma (Miami, Fla./Archimedean Upper Conservatory), 'Monkey' junior Jonathan Cosgrove (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), 'Citronboss27' sophomore Michael Guzaitis (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) and 'Glocktopus' senior Michael Hamm (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence).
- The Cougars lost to Kennesaw State University (Ga.) on September 19 by a 3-1 score in the best-of-five contest. Saint Xavier won the first game, 2-1, however they fell 3-1, 3-0 & 2-0 in the subsequent games.
- SXU was swept by Kentucky, falling 3-0. The Wildcats won by scores of 2-1, 1-0 & 3-0.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate:
- The four-person lineup for SSBU for the Cougars featured 'Blokit' sophomore Francisco Cayetano-Perez (Chicago, Ill./Curie), 'B-Bop' sophomore Brian Dykstra (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), 'Frieren' freshman Melissa Rios Medina (Mount Prospect, Ill./Hersey) and 'Immersed' sophomore Javier Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill./Hancock College Prep). They won via forfeit over Defiance College (Ohio) on September 20 in a conference matchup.
- SXU traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. to compete in the Confluence at Rosa Park Circle on September 23. They had three matches and were edged in all three by 1-0 scores to Oakland, Lawrence Tech University (Mich.) and Central Michigan University, respectively.
- Saint Xavier lost to Trine University (Ind) by a 2-0 score on October 4 in GLEC play and were tripped up by Manchester University (Ind.) also by a 2-0 margin in conference action on October 7.
Valorant:
- The Valorant team of 'Ray' freshman Ray Ago Rama (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo Community), 'Ambargo' freshman Zavier Hamilton (Detroit, Mich./Thurston), 'KitKat' sophomore Katy McCool (Clarendon Hills, Ill./DuPage/Hinsdale Central), 'TBOP' senior Tien Nguyen (Calumet City, Ill./Bloom), 'BQ31' senior Brandon Quirarte (Camarillo, Calif./Rio Mesa) and 'szubi' junior Sebastian Szuba (Justice, Ill./Moraine Valley/Argo Community).
- SXU defeated Indiana Wesleyan University 2-0 in GLEC play on September 20. They followed that up with another 2-0 victory, this time over Albion College (Mich.) in conference action on September 21.
- The Cougars extended its winning streak with a 2-0 triumph over Anderson University (Ind.) in a GLEC matchup on September 23 and had a 2-0 victory over Manchester on September 27.
- Saint Xavier moved its record to 6-1 with a 2-0 win over Lourdes University (Ohio) in conference play on October 4.
League of Legends:
- The League of Legends team of 'Moochi' junior Xavier Bryant (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), 'MICKEYMOUSE' senior Josh Lagrosa (Orland Park, Ill./Shepard), 'dmshadow' senior Daniel Mendez (Chicago, Ill./Daley/Spry Community Links), 'SomethingCool' sophomore Ahmed Osman (Chicago, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Park House) and 'WHAT U GOT' junior Armend Shabani (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg).
- SXU took down Lourdes with a 2-0 GLEC win on September 20 but lost to Defiance in conference play, 2-0, on September 23. The Cougars fell to Anderson in a GLEC contest, 2-0, on October 5.
Saint Xavier (19-20, 10-5 GLEC) has four of its five teams in action in the upcoming week. Valorant starts things off with a match vs. Defiance on October 9 and League of Legends faces Manchester, also on October 9. Overwatch takes on University of Mississippi on October 10. SSBU plays Valparaiso University (Ind.) on October 12, while League of Legends faces Bethel University (Ind.). SSBU plays Alma College (Mich.) on October 13, as does Valorant on October 14. Overwatch takes on Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) on October 15.
