SXU Men’s Basketball Topped by No. 2 Grace, 89-70

Winona Lake, Ind. – Three players finished in double-figures for the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team (1-3, 0-0 CCAC) in an 89-70 loss to No. 2 Grace College (Ind.) in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening in Winona Lake, Ind. Senior guard Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb./Sioux Falls/Nebraska-Kearney/Bellevue West) recorded a team-high 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting (61.5 percent) from the field along with six rebounds, four assists and four steals in 35 minutes on the court.
  • Junior guard Sando Hill (Vanoss, Okla./Lyon/Seminole State/Vanoss) tallied a season-best 18 points, shooting at a 50.0 percent clip (7-for-14). He added three steals, two assists and a pair of rebounds.
  • Junior guard Trey Ward (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) was strong off the bench, scoring a season-high 18 points while going 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) from the field, including 80.0 percent (4-for-5) from three-point range. He also had two steals in 23 minutes of playing time.
  • The Lancers built a 43-25 lead in the first half by shooting 59.4 percent (19-for-32) to SXU's 34.4 percent (11-for-32) and scoring 28 points in the paint. Hill and Ward each scored seven points for the Cougars in the frame, while Johnson had five points and five rebounds.
  • Grace added to its advantage by going up 67-42 after a three at the 12:53 mark of the second period. Saint Xavier responded with a 20-5 run over the next five minutes that saw Ward knock down three treys during that stretch to pull within 72-62 with 7:32 remaining in regulation. GC closes out the contest with a 17-8 run to come away with the win.
  • The trio of Johnson, Hill and Ward each scored in double-figures in the second half. Johnson was 6-for-8 from the field with 14 points, Hill posted 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting and Ward was 4-for-4, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc with 11 points.
Saint Xavier (1-3, 0-0 CCAC) starts Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) competition on Tuesday, November 21 when they play No. 15 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Bourbonnais, Ill. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 pm tipoff.
