Derrell Ties Program Record in an 83-82 win for SXU over ONU

Bourbonnais, Ill. – Junior guard Aaliyahna Derrell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek) tied the single-game Saint Xavier University women's basketball (2-4, 1-0 CCAC) record for assists with 13, along with a career-best 12 rebounds, four points and two steals in an 83-82 victory over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Tuesday evening to start Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play at McHie Arena in Bourbonnais, Ill. Trailing 82-81 with just over 30 seconds remaining in regulation, junior guard Hayley Macdonald (Canberra, Australia/Williston State/Lake Ginninderra) cut to the basket and scored on a layup with just :03 left off a pass from senior guard Bethany Baldwin (Watersmeet, Mich./Finlandia/Triton/Watersmeet) to put the Cougars up. The Tigers called a timeout and had a chance to win, but the shot missed to give SXU to road victory.

Derrell now shares the single-game assist record with three other players, all victories for the Cougars. Former standout Nina Solava (2000-02) set the record at home vs. Indiana University South Bend on January 5, 2002. Former NAIA All-American Shalonda Young (2007-11) tied the mark against ONU in the CCAC Tournament Championship on March 6, 2010 at the Shannon Center. Former NAIA All-American Mikayla Leyden (2014-17) became the first player to hand out 13 assists twice, doing so three days apart during the 2016-17 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship Tournament. She had 13 dimes in a second-round win over Friends University (Kan.) on March 10, 2017 and dished out 13 assists in a Semifinal victory over Concordia University (Neb.) on March 13, 2017.
  • Baldwin finished with a game-high 20 points while shooting at a 75.0 percent clip (9-for-12) with seven rebounds, three steals and two assists in 26 minutes off the bench.
  • Junior forward Alyssa Crenshaw (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) was efficient from the floor as well, making 8-of-9 shots (88.9 percent) and recording 19 points, five rebounds, three steals and an assist.
  • Sophomore guard Jaidn Green (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) scored 15 points while going 5-for-5 from the foul line. She added three steals, two assists and a rebound.
  • Macdonald collected 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and had a take away.
  • Sophomore center Eleanor Harris (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) came away with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
  • SXU hit season-highs in multiple categories, including points, field goal percentage (55.6 percent), field goals (35), free throw percentage (92.3 percent), assists (26) and rebounds (47).
  • Saint Xavier was nearly perfect in the first quarter making 13-of-15 shot attempts (86.7 percent) will Baldwin leading the way with eight points and Derrell handing out four assists. Olivet Nazarene kept pace, squaring the game at 28-28 after the first 10 minutes.
  • Crenshaw made all five of her shot attempts in the second period (10 points) and Derrell added five helpers. The Cougar defense limited the Tigers to just 15.8 percent (3-for-19) from the field, including 0-for-12 from three-point range for a 50-42 halftime advantage.
  • Baldwin added eight points in the third quarter as SXU shot 10-for-17 from the field to build a 76-64 lead heading into the final frame. Saint Xavier struggled in the fourth quarter, shooting just 2-for-9 as a team. Green made a pair of foul shots to put the Cougars ahead 81-72 with 4:29 to, however ONU rallied over the next four minutes to take the lead on a three, setting up Macdonald's game-winning shot.
Saint Xavier (2-4/1-0 CCAC) returns to the Shannon Center for the first time in over a month when they take on Judson University (Ill.) in CCAC action on Wednesday, November 29. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start.
