ST. LOUIS – The Saint Xavier University men's basketball team (8-5, 2-2 CCAC) ran its winning streak to six games as they defeated University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis 106-79 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the UHSP Gym in St. Louis, Mo. The Cougars eclipsed the century mark for the first time this season and they continued their hot shooting by making 58.2 percent of their shots (39-for-67) and draining 14 three-pointers. It was the fifth straight game that SXU has shot better than 50.0 percent from the field and are now shooting 49.8 percent (369-for-741) in 13 games this year. All eleven players that saw time on the court for Saint Xavier played at least 10 minutes, scored at least four points and came away with at least one rebound.
- Senior guard Cedric Johnson (Bellevue, Neb./Sioux Falls/Nebraska-Kearney/Bellevue West) led all scorers with 21 points on an efficient 8-for-11 shooting and was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. He added five assists, four rebounds and a steal in 24 minutes.
- Junior guard Trey Ward (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) tallied 16 points while shooting 6-for-7 from the field, along with three assists, two steals and a rebound in 14 minutes off the bench.
- Junior forward Andre Brandon (Coralville, Iowa/Sauk Valley/Liberty) recorded 11 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.
- Freshman forward James Stevenson (Sun River Terrace, Ill./Momence) tied his career-high with 10 points with three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
- Freshman forward Marko Tojagic (Belgrade, Serbia/Saint Andrews) posted a career-best 10 points, tied his career-high with four rebounds and had two steals.
- Freshman guard Jordan Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) collected a team-high seven rebounds, tying his career-best, with five points and three assists.
- Freshman guard James White (Chicago, Ill./Chicago-Agricultural Sciences) registered a career-best nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from deep, along with two assists and a pair of rebounds.
- Freshman guard Mason Kibelkis (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) also knocked down 3-of-5 three-point attempts, finishing with nine points, three rebounds and a steal.
- SXU sank 8-of-12 three-point attempts (66.7 percent) and went 63.3 percent (19-for-30) overall from the field in the first 20 minutes to hold a 51-38 lead at halftime. They also hauled in 19 rebounds in the half and finished the game with 41. It was the third this season that they collected 40 or more rebounds in a contest. Johnson led the offensive attack with 14 points, four assists and four rebounds in the frame.
- Ward made all four of his shot attempts in the second half and scored 11 of his 16 points as the Cougars put 55 points on the scoreboard. Five other players added at least six points in the half. Saint Xavier concludes both the 2023 and non-conference portions of their schedule.
Saint Xavier (8-5, 3-2 CCAC) returns to action on Saturday, January 6 when they host No. 20 Roosevelt University (Ill.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
