CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University Esports teams wrapped up competition in the Fall portion of their schedule. The Valorant varsity and JV squads made noise as the varsity team won the Great Lakes Esports Conference (GLEC) regular season title and reached the eight-team GLEC Championship Tournament that took place on November 3-4 in Columbus, Ohio. The JV team finished as the runners-up in the NACE Varsity Plus East 7 Tournament. The SXU League of Legends was also in action.
Valorant:
- SXU featured a lineup this season of 'Ray' freshman Ray Ago Rama (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo Community), 'Ambargo' freshman Zavier Hamilton (Detroit, Mich./Thurston), 'KitKat' sophomore Katy McCool (Clarendon Hills, Ill./DuPage/Hinsdale Central), 'TBOP' senior Tien Nguyen (Calumet City, Ill./Bloom), 'BQ31' senior Brandon Quirarte (Camarillo, Calif./Rio Mesa) and 'szubi' junior Sebastian Szuba (Justice, Ill./Moraine Valley/Argo Community).
- Before the GLEC Tournament, Saint Xavier participated in the CVAL Fall – North Region Tournament. In the pool play, the Cougars lost to University of Waterloo (Ontario) on October 21, 2-0. They were defeated 2-0 by University of Illinois on October 22 and lost in the rematch on October 28, also by a 2-0 margin. SXU faced University of Missouri on October 31 but were defeated 2-0. They picked up a 2-0 victory over Northwestern University (Ill.) on November 4.
- In their quarterfinal match vs. Trine University (Ind.) that began on November 3, Saint Xavier won 2-0. In the semifinals, they lost to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) 2-1 in the best-of-three contest. The Cougars claimed third place in the tournament by virtue of a forfeit victory over Tiffin University (Ohio) in the third-place match.
Valorant JV:
- SXU defeated Widener University (Pa.) 2-0 on October 23, were tripped up by Rockford University (Ill.), 2-0, on October 25, and they concluded the week with a 2-1 triumph over Baldwin Wallace University (Ohio) on November 1. Saint Xavier ended the regular season on the right note with a 2-1 victory over University of Southern Mississippi on November 8.
- The Cougars earned a bye in the NACE Varsity Plus East 7 Tournament and they took down Rockford in the semifinals by a 2-1 score. They came up short in the championship, falling to Kettering University (Mich.), 2-0.
League of Legends:
- The League of Legends team sported a lineup of 'Moochi' junior Xavier Bryant (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), 'MICKEYMOUSE' senior Josh Lagrosa (Orland Park, Ill./Shepard), 'dmshadow' senior Daniel Mendez (Chicago, Ill./Daley/Spry Community Links), 'SomethingCool' sophomore Ahmed Osman (Chicago, Ill./Illinois-Chicago/Park House) and 'WHAT U GOT' junior Armend Shabani (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg).
- SXU was edged by Bethel University (Ind.) in their GLEC finale, 2-1, on October 26.
Saint Xavier (28-33, 15-10 GLEC) returns to action in January when they begin the Spring semester portion of their schedule.
