Cuplinskas Powers No. 12 SXU in Sweep of Illinois Tech

CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Vejas Cuplinskas (Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfield) recorded a career-high 17 kills on a stellar .464 attack percentage (17-4-28), along with three digs and two blocks (one solo) to lead No. 12 Saint Xavier University men's volleyball (6-1/3-0 CCAC) to a 3-0 non-conference win (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) over NCAA Division III Illinois Institute of Technology Friday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Freshman libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) also had a big night, tying the SXU single-match record for most digs in three sets, with a career-best 19. Former standout, and current assistant coach, Jake Olson (2017-19) was the last player to hit that mark, when he had 19 digs vs. Robert Morris University (Ill.) on March 12, 2019, at the Shannon Center. Velez also had four assists and a kill in the win.

  • Junior middle blocker Jake McClain (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) collected a season-high 10 kills on an impressive .692 attack percentage (10-1-13) and added two blocks (one solo) and a pair of service aces.
  • Freshman outside hitter Aedan Vanegas (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) tallied his first collegiate kill and finished with six on the night. He added a season-best two digs as well.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Kegan Olig (Fond du Loc, Wis./Fond du Loc) registered five kills, tied his career-high with two aces, an assist, a dig and a solo block.
  • Senior setter Noah Randall (Plainfield, Ill./Quincy/Plainfield Central) issued a match-best 27 assists along with four digs and two kills.
  • Junior setter Jason Klein (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) dished out a career-best 32 assists, recorded his first collegiate block and first collegiate kill, three digs and a service ace.
  • Saint Xavier had a team attack percentage of .333 (41-13-84) and is now 5-0 when posting an attack percentage of .300 or higher this season.

No. 12 Saint Xavier (6-1/3-0 CCAC) takes on No. 13 Indiana Institute of Technology on Tuesday, February 14. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm first serve at the Shannon Center.
