No. 25 Saint Xavier Splits Doubleheader on Opening Day

Rosemont, Ill. – The No. 25 Saint Xavier University softball team (1-1/0-0 CCAC) lost game one, 2-1, in their season opener vs. Madonna University (Mich.) in the morning but bounced back to defeat Concordia University Ann Arbor (Mich.) in the night cap by a score of 9-1 in the Roosevelt University (Ill.) Dome Tournament at the Ballpark in Rosemont in Rosemont, Ill. Sophomore designated player Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) made a splash in her SXU by going 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored, an RBI, a double and a walk. Senior infielder Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) also played well, collecting two hits in six at-bats with three runs scored and an RBI.

Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) reached a major career milestone when she led off game two against the Cardinals with a base hit. It was the 200th of her collegiate career and she becomes just the 15th player in program history to tally 200 or more career hits since the team's first season in 1980.

Game One:

  • Saint Xavier lost in a pitcher's duel as neither starter allowed a run until the 7th inning. Sophomore pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) took the loss after going the distance with seven hits allowed in 7.0 innings, two runs, five walks and five strikeouts.
  • The Crusaders took the lead in the top of the 7th with a two-out, two run home run
  • Freshman infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) played well in her collegiate debut, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base.
  • Morgan, who went 2-for-3 in the game, scored on an RBI base hit by freshman pinch-hitter Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) after she worked a lengthy at-bat with two outs in the bottom of the 7th.

Game Two:

  • Junior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) earned the win with a complete game allowing just five hits, one run (unearned) and recording five strikeouts.
  • Senior outfielder Sarah Bowen (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
  • Senior catcher Maggie Bailey (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) also was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Haefling went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and was hit-by-pitch.
  • Morgan had two hits in two at-bats with an RBI, a run and a walk.
  • The Cougars gave Summers early run support by scoring three times in the top of the 1st. Haefling drove in a run on an infield single. An error allowed Bowen to score, and Morgan laced an RBI single.
  • In the top of the 4th, freshman outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport), making her collegiate debut, reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. She came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Bowen.
  • CUAA scored its lone run in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI single, after an error earlier in the inning.
  • Wright lined an RBI single through the hole on the left side of the infield in the top of the 5th and Haefling scored on a passes ball to put the Cougars up 8-1.
  • Sophomore pinch-hitter Kyla Kissee (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th.

No. 25 Saint Xavier (1-1/0-0 CCAC) plays two more games at the Ballpark in Rosemont on Saturday, February 4, when they take on Aquinas College (Mich.) at 1:30, followed by a matchup with Cleary University (Mich.) at 3:45 pm.
