Box Score 2 Rosemont, Ill. – Junior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) earned the win in both ends of a doubleheader to help No. 25 Saint Xavier University softball (3-1/0-0 CCAC) earn two victories at the Roosevelt University (Ill.) Dome Tournament at the Ballpark in Rosemont in Rosemont, Ill. Saturday afternoon. The Cougars defeated Aquinas College (Mich.) 9-1 in five innings in game one and edged past Cleary University (Mich.) in the second game. Summers moved her record to 3-0 on the young season as she tossed a combined 6.0 innings of relief with six hits, two runs, a walk and four strikeouts.
Game One:
- Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI.
- Freshman outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) doubled for her first collegiate hit and finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, a run and a steal.
- Sophomore catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
- Freshman infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) tallied two hits in two at-bats with an RBI and a run.
- Sophomore pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) made the start and worked 3.0 innings with one hit, one run, four walks and two strikeouts.
- Summers finished the game with 2.0 innings, three hits allowed, one walk and two strikeouts.
- The Saints got on the board first with an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the 1st.
- The Cougars responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning after sending 12 batters to the plate. Matlock tied the game with an RBI double and gave SXU the lead when she stole home on a double steal. Morgan recorded an RBI single, followed by an RBI base hit by senior infielder Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire). Wright added to the lead with an RBI single and Robinson registered her second hit of the inning that plated two runs and Matlock capped the frame with her second RBI double.
- Morgan put down an RBI bunt single up the first base line to score Robinson in the bottom of the fourth.
Game Two:
- Robinson finished 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
- Sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) went 2-for-3 with two RBI's, a double and a run scored.
- Junior pitcher Alyssa Frey (Sheboygan, Wis./Trinity International/Sheboygan South) made her first start of the season and went 3.0 innings with four hits, three runs and two strikeouts.
- Summers worked 4.0 innings with three hits, two runs and a pair of strikeouts for the win.
- Cleary took the lead in the bottom of the first with a fielder's choice off a sacrifice bunt.
- Senior catcher Maggie Bailey (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) tied the game in the top of the 3rd with an RBI from a safety squeeze.
- The 'Blue Cougars' went back up in the bottom of the 3rd with a two-out double, followed by an RBI single.
- The 'Red Cougars' responded with their own two-out rally in the top of the 4th. Carr ripped an RBI double to centerfield and scored when Robinson sliced a single down the leftfield line. Senior outfielder Nicole Lovato (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) pulled an RBI single to rightfield that put SXU up 4-3.
- CU retied the game in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single.
- Wright broke the tie in the top of the 5th when she stole home on a double steal and Carr would drive it Matlock for a 6-4 advantage.
- Cleary scored in the top of the 7th on a stolen base, however Summers would end the game when she fielded a comebacker for the 1-3 putout.
No. 25 Saint Xavier (3-1/0-0 CCAC) finishes play at the Ballpark in Rosemont on Sunday, February 5, with two games. They face Concordia University Ann Arbor (Mich.) at 8:00 am, followed by a matchup with Aquinas College (Mich.) at 10:15 am.
