Bowen Powers No. 25 SXU to Doubleheader Sweep

Rosemont, Ill. – Senior outfielder Sarah Bowen (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) finished 4-for-7 on the day with six RBIs, three runs and triple in a pair of victories for the No. 25 Saint Xavier University softball team (5-1/0-0 CCAC) at the Roosevelt University (Ill.) Dome Tournament at the Ballpark in Rosemont in Rosemont, Ill. Sunday morning. Bowen belted her first home run of the season and drove in four runs in SXU's game one win over Concordia University Ann Arbor (Mich.) by a 10-3 margin and went legged out a two-run triple as junior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) tossed a three-hit shutout in a six-inning, 8-0 triumph over Aquinas College (Mich.) in game two.

Game One:

  • Freshman outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Sophomore infielder Lilli Mcglothlin (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run.
  • Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) stole two bases, scored twice and had a hit in three at-bats.
  • Sophomore pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) earned her first win of the season (1-1) with a complete game performance. She gave up five hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and had five strikeouts.
  • The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st with a safety squeeze bunt.
  • Robinson tied the game on a CUAA error and senior infielder Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) put the Cougar ahead with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st. Sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.
  • Concordia used another safety squeeze bunt in the top of the 2nd to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • Mcglothlin lined an RBI double to the gap in right center for her first collegiate hit and Bowen cracked a three-run home run to extend the SXU advantage to 7-2.
  • An error in the top of the 5th plated a run for the Cardinals.
  • Matlock sliced a two-run single and scored on an infield single by Bowen in the bottom of the 6th to cap the scoring.

Game Two:

  • Bowen went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a triple.
  • Haefling also was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and a run scored.
  • Freshman infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) collected a two-run triple and a run in three at-bats.
  • Robinson tallied two stolen bases, a double, an RBI and a run in four at-bats.
  • Summers improved to 4-0 with three strikeouts and a walk in her first shutout of the season.
  • Wright opened the scoring with a two-run triple to the gap in right center in the top of the 2nd. She came around to score on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of Robinson.
  • Haefling clubbed an RBI triple to center field and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Carr to make it 5-0 in the top of the 3rd.
  • Bowen led off the top of the 5th with a hit-by-pitch and scored after an Aquinas error and pulled a two-run triple into the left center field gap in the top of the 6th.
  • Summers worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 6th to give Saint Xavier its fifth consecutive victory.

No. 25 Saint Xavier (5-1/0-0 CCAC) is scheduled to play Missouri Baptist University in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 11 in Creve Coeur, Mo. Game one set for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
