Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) earned a pair of victories on the afternoon, first by allowing just two hits in a 12-0 win in five innings, followed by 3.1 innings of relief in a 10-3 triumph in game two to lead Saint Xavier University softball (17-9/4-0 CCAC) over Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Thursday afternoon in the home opener for the Cougars at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. Sarah Bowen (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), along with junior infielder
Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central), each collected five RBI on the day. Reese provided plenty of power with four doubles, while Bowen doubled and tripled in the sweep. Senior infielder
Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) finished the day with four RBI and became just the 19th player in program history to record 100 or more career RBI.
Game One:
- Bowen was 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI and a double.
- Reese went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two doubles and a run scored.
- Sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) recorded two hits in three at-bats with three RBI and a run.
- Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) had a hit in two trips to the plate with two runs, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
- Summers (10-4) went 4.0 innings with just two hits and striking out eight batters.
- Freshman pitcher Oliva Balog (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) worked a 1-2-3 top of the 5th with a pair of strikeouts.
- SXU plated four runs in the bottom of the 1st with Bowen driving in two runs on a base hit, Carr drove her in with an RBI groundout and Haefling lined an RBI single to center.
- Carr started an eight-run rally in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI base hit after a leadoff double from Bowen. Reese hammered a two-run double, and Robinson drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 8-0. Bowen drove in a run and two more crossed the plate of an error and Carr capped the inning with an RBI single to make it 12-0.
Game Two:
- Freshman outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) had four hits in four at-bats with two runs and a stolen base.
- Reese doubled twice in three at-bats with three RBI, a walk and a run.
- Haefling was 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles and a run scored.
- Freshman infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
- Bowen finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, a triple and a run scored.
- Senior outfielder Nicole Lovato (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) was 1-for-4 with a triple.
- Sophomore pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee, Falls, Wis./Hamilton) made the start in the circle and went 1.2 innings with one hit, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
- Junior pitcher Alyssa Frey (Sheboygan, Wis./Trinity International/Sheboygan South) logged 2.0 innings of relief and allowed two hits, one run, two walks and had three strikeouts.
- Summers (11-4) finished the game by throwing 3.1 innings out of the bullpen without allowing a runner and tallied a pair of strikeouts.
- The Wolves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd on back-to-back hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded.
- Reese got a run back in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI double.
- Cardinal Stritch went back up two runs in the top of the 4th off an RBI single.
- Saint Xavier responded with a seven-run rally in the bottom half of the inning. Bowen sliced a two-run triple to right, Reese slugged a two-run double to center field, Haefling also hit a two-run double, and Wright lined an RBI single back up the middle to put the Cougars ahead 8-3.
- Robinson lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th and Haefling doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the 6th.
- Summers rolled three groundouts in the top of the 7th the notch her second win of the day.
Saint Xavier (17-9/4-0 CCAC) is scheduled for a CCAC doubleheader with Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Friday, March 31. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
