Box Score 2 CHICAGO – Junior setter Jason Klein (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) handed out a program record 63 assists and freshman outside hitter Jan Lopuch (Krakow, Poland/I Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Sportowe) posted an SXU record 27 kills to help guide No. 13 Saint Xavier University men's volleyball (12-3/7-0 CCAC) to a thrilling 3-2 (27-25, 25-20, 24-26, 24-26, 20-18) victory over No. 11 University of Jamestown (N.D.) in match two of the Viterbo University (Wis.) Tri-Match Saturday afternoon in La Crosse, Wis. In their first match, the Cougars defeated host Viterbo in three sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action. Junior outside hitter Vejas Cuplinskas (Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfield) tied his career-high with 17 kills in the three-set victory.
Lopuch wasn't the only player for Saint Xavier to collect 20 or more kills, as fellow freshman and countryman, opposite hitter Oskar Krzyzak (Rzeszow, Poland/Szkota Mistrzostwa Sportowego Rzeszow) tied his career-high with 24 kills in the win over the Jimmies. It is the first time in team history that two or more players each had 20 or more kills in the same match. They also helped to set the team single-match record with 67 total kills in the five-set triumph.
Match One:
- Cuplinskas finished with a .387 attack percentage (17-5-31) and added four digs and a block.
- Klein registered 40 assists, tied for the third-most in three sets for the Cougars, five digs, a career-best four blocks and an ace.
- Lopuch tallied nine kills, along with seven digs and two service aces.
- Sophomore outside hitter Kegan Olig (Fond du Loc, Wis./Fond du Loc) came away with six kills and two blocks (one solo).
- Senior middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) also had six kills and added two digs, a block and a service ace.
- Junior middle blocker John Glennon (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) collected a match-high five blocks and had two kills.
- Freshman libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) recorded six digs, an ace and an assist.
Match Two:
- Lopuch finished with an attack percentage of .524 (27-5-42) and had four digs, two blocks (one solo) and two service aces.
- Krzyzak had an attack percentage of .333 (24-8-48) and tallied his second double-double of the season with 11 digs. He added three blocks (one solo) and an ace.
- In addition to his record-setting assist total, Klein set a new career-high with six digs, had a service ace and posted his first career solo block.
- Velez scooped up a team-best 14 digs and had four assists, helping to set the team single-match record for assists with 67.
- Ehlers finished with five digs, five kills, an ace and a block, while Cuplinskas added four kills, a block and a dig.
- Olig recorded seven digs with four kills and a block.
- Junior middle blocker Jake McClain (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) collected three blocks, two kills and a dig.
No. 13 Saint Xavier (12-3/7-0 CCAC) returns to the Shannon Center to take on No. 10 Lourdes University (Ohio) on Tuesday, March 7. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
