Summers Tosses Perfect Game for SXU Softball in DH Sweep of TIU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHICAGO – Junior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) became the seventh pitcher in program history to throw a Perfect Game in since 1998 and it was the 13th Perfect Game in team history as the Saint Xavier University softball team (21-11/8-2 CCAC) in game one as they swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader vs. Trinity International University (Ill.) Tuesday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. with SXU playing as the visiting team as the games were originally set to be played at TIU's home field, but the field was unplayable. Saint Xavier took game one 17-0 in five innings and game two by an 8-0 decision in six innings. It's Summers' first full Perfect Game, as she and former NAIA All-American Allison Golic (2018-21) threw the only combined Perfect Game in team history on March 4, 2021 vs. Lawrence Tech University. Golic threw the most recent Perfect Game at Roosevelt University (Ill.) on March 27, 2021. Golic also threw the last No-Hitter for the Cougars on April 25, 2021 at Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.).

Game One:

  • Sophomore infielder Lilli Mcglothlin (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) doubled twice and drove in five runs and scored a run.
  • Freshman outfielder Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run.
  • Senior infielder Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a double.
  • Junior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) finished 1-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBI and a home run.
  • Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run.
  • Summers (13-6) final line was 5.0 innings, no runs, no hits, no walks and eight strikeouts.
  • Reese homered and Haefling ripped a two-run double to put SXU up 3-0 in the top of the 1st.
  • Matlock hit a two-run single back up the middle to make it 5-0 in the top of the 2nd.
  • In the top of the 3rd, a run scored due to a passed ball, freshman infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) hit an RBI single, Reese drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Matlock had an RBI base hit and Haefling added a run on a groundout to double the lead to 10-0.
  • Freshman infielder Paige Thomas (Racine, Wis./Case) lined a double in her first collegiate at-bat and scored on Mcglothlin double that brought home two runs. Freshman Andriana Kilias (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) recorded her first collegiate hit and Mcglothin would score on an error on the play to make it 13-0 in the top of the 4th.
  • In the top of the 5th, freshman catcher Sophia DuVernay (Algonac, Mich./Algonac) tallied her first collegiate base hit and scored on an error and sophomore outfielder Maddi Stahulak (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) would pick up an RBI on the play. Mcglothin capped the scoring with a bases clearing double.

Game Two:

  • Robinson was 3-for-4 with three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and her first collegiate home run.
  • Senior outfielder Sarah Bowen (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Freshman catcher Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) also tripled and was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Sophomore pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee, Falls, Wis./Hamilton) fired a one-hit shutout to move her record to 6-4 on the season and she added seven strikeouts.
  • Carr and Natanek each hit RBI singles in the top of the 2nd for a 2-0 lead.
  • Bowen legged out an infield single to score Robinson in the top of the 3rd to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Robinson sliced a two-run single to left in the top of the 4th to make it 5-0.
  • Carr belted a two-run home run over the wall in right field in the top of the 5th and Robinson added an RBI single in the top of the 6th.

Saint Xavier (21-11/8-2 CCAC) makes the short trip to Palos Height, Ill. to face Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Friday, April 14. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
