Bowen & Reese Power SXU in DH Sweep of Trinity Christian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Palos Heights, Ill. – Senior outfielder Sarah Bowen (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) scored three runs with a home run and a double in game one and junior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) slugged a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the fifth in game two to help guide Saint Xavier University softball (23-11/10-2 CCAC) to a doubleheader sweep of Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Friday afternoon Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars took game one by a score of 10-1 and won the nightcap, 8-4. With the pair of victories, head coach Erin Mollohan-Corrao earned career wins No. 199 & No. 200 at SXU since taking over the program prior to the 2017 season. She sports a 200-81 record (.712) in her seventh season as head coach at Saint Xavier.

Game One:

  • Bowen finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Senior infielder Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) collected two hits in four at-bats with two RBI, a triple and a run.
  • Junior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) made the start and ran her record to 14-6 in the circle after throwing a complete game with 7.0 innings of work, four hits, a run, two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Reese opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 1st.
  • Haefling sliced a two-run triple to left and freshman catcher Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) added an RBI single make it 4-0 in the top of the 2nd.
  • Carr lined an RBI single up the middle to score Bowen to extend the advantage to 5-0 in the top of the 3rd.
  • Senior outfielder Nicole Lovato (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) stole second and scored on an error in the top of the 4th.
  • Bowen belted her third home run of the season to put the Cougars up 6-0 in the top of the 5th.
  • Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) lifted a sac fly in the top of the 6th.
  • The Trolls got on the board in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • Carr and freshman infielder Kaitlyn Wright (Chicago, Ill./Marist) both hit sac flies in the top of the 7th as SXU scored at least one run in every inning.

Game Two:

  • Bowen was 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and a double.
  • Carr went 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Freshman designated player Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
  • Sophomore pitcher Julianne Claas (Menomonee, Falls, Wis./Hamilton) made the start and went 2.0 with three hits, three runs, a walk and a strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Alyssa Frey (Sheboygan, Wis./Trinity International/Sheboygan South) earned the win in relief (3-1) after working 5.0 innings and allowing four hits, a run and striking out two batters.
  • An error allowed Lovato to score to give SXU a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd.
  • TCC took the lead in the next half inning with an RBI single and a two-run double.
  • Reese cracked her team-leading fifth home run of the year with two outs in the top of the 5th and another error scored Bowen later in the inning to put Saint Xavier up 5-3.
  • Bowen laced a two-run double to center field and came around to score on an error to push the lead to 8-3 in the top of the 7th.
  • The Trolls got a run back in the bottom of the 7th with a two-out base hit before Frey recorded the final out.

Saint Xavier (23-11/10-2 CCAC) has a quick turnaround as the host Roosevelt University (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 15 at the SXU Softball Field. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
