Summers Throws One-Hitter in 1-0 Setback, Game Two Suspended

Box Score CHICAGO – Junior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) allowed just one hit on the afternoon and it proved to be the difference as she gave up a leadoff home run to start the top of the 2nd in a 1-0 loss for Saint Xavier University softball (25-12/12-3 CCAC) in game one of their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup with St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Wednesday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. The second game was suspended due to lighting in the bottom of the 1st with runners on the corners and no one out. The game will be resumed at a later date.
  • Summers' (15-7) final line was 7.0 innings with one hit, one run, one walk and five strikeouts.
  • Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) was 2-for-4, as was junior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central).
  • Sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) went 1-for-3 and freshman catcher Morgan Natanek (Palos Heights, Ill./Stagg) finished 1-for-2.
  • A two-out base hit by Natanek split the gap in right center that allowed senior infielder Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) to motor into third after drawing a walk, however SAU got out of the inning with a popup to the shortstop.
  • The Cougars would get leadoff singles in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th but were unable to get the equalizer.
  • A one-out error, a base hit by Robinson and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for SXU in the bottom of the 7th, however the Fighting Bees induced an infield fly and a popup to the second baseman to end the rally.

Game Two

  • Junior pitcher Alyssa Frey (Sheboygan, Wis./Trinity International/Sheboygan South) made the start and set the side down in order before the game was suspended.

Saint Xavier (25-12/12-3 CCAC) heads to Elgin, Ill to take on Judson University (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Friday, April 21. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
