Balanced Attack Leads Saint Xavier to DH Sweep of Judson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elgin, Ill. – Behind a combined 16 runs and 26 hits, the Saint Xavier University softball team (27-12/14-3 CCAC) came away with a pair of victories over Judson University (Ill.) Friday afternoon in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) competition at the JU Softball Complex in Elgin, Ill. Junior pitcher Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) struck out a career-high 10 batters, senior outfielder Nicole Lovato (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) and junior infielder Brooke Koran (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) each had two RBI in a 6-0 win in game one. Senior outfielder Sarah Bowen (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) both homered in a 10-0 triumph in game two.

Game One:

  • Lovato went 1-for-4 and Koran finished 0-1 with a run and a walk.
  • Carr was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Summers' (16-7) gave up just three hits and a walk over 7.0 innings in throwing her fifth shutout of the season.
  • Freshman designated player Taylor Becker (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) and Koran drew walks with the bases loaded to give SXU a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd.
  • In the top of the 6th, Koran was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, freshman infielder Kaitlyn Wright laced an RBI single, and Lovato drove home two runs with a base hit.
  • Summers posted strikeout No. 10 to end the ballgame.

Game Two

  • Lovato collected three hits in four at-bats with two stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Bowen finished 1-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.
  • Carr also was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
  • Senior infielder Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) had two hits in four trips to the plate with two RBI.
  • Freshman designated player Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Wright went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a stolen base.
  • Junior pitcher Alyssa Frey (Sheboygan, Wis./Trinity International/Sheboygan South) pitched 5.0 innings and allowed just three hits with a strikeout to improve to 5-1 in the circle this season.
  • Sophomore Julianne Claas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Hamilton) finished the game with a hit given up and had a strikeout.
  • Carr led off the top of the 2nd with her second home run of the year and Bowen scored via a wild pitch for a 2-0 advantage.
  • A two-out rally netted two runs in the top of the 4th. Lovato hit an RBI single, as did Matlock before she was thrown out at second base.
  • Bowen belted her fourth home run, a two-run shot, with one out in the top of the 5th to push the lead to 6-0.
  • In the top of the 6th, Matlock picked up her second RBI of the game to score Lovato, Haefling drove in a pair of runs on a base hit and sophomore catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) hit an RBI single.

Saint Xavier (27-12/14-3 CCAC) hosts Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a CCAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 25. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
