Laila Summers (Joliet, Ill./Providence Catholic) threw a three-hitter in a 12-2 five-inning victory for Saint Xavier University softball (29-12/16-3 CCAC) in game one and worked 3.2 innings of relief to pick up the win in a 3-2 triumph in 10 innings in game two over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Tuesday afternoon in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago, Ill. Senior infielder
Morgan Haefling (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) collected three RBIs, hit a double and finished 1-for-2 with a run and a walk in game one. Freshman designated player
Haley Matlock (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th, scoring sophomore pinch runner
Maddi Stahulak (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) on a fielder's choice to complete the sweep.
Game One:
- Matlock had two RBI after going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
- Senior outfielder Lyda Robinson (Seneca, Ill./Seneca) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
- Sophomore infielder Abbie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Senior outfielder Nicole Lovato (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) stole two bases, scored twice and was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
- sophomore catcher Lindsay Morgan (Huntley, Ill./Keiser/Huntley) also went 1-for-2 with two runs and had an RBI.
- Summers allowed two runs, with two walks and had three strikeouts.
- The Crimson Wave struck first with two runs in the top of the 1st on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice.
- SXU responded with 12 unanswered runs with six coming in the bottom of the 1st and six more in the bottom of the 2nd.
- Matlock drove in a run after reaching on an error to get Saint Xavier on the board. Carr tied the game with an RBI single and Morgan gave them the lead with an RBI base hit of her own. Haefling belted a two-run double and scored on an error.
- Junior infielder Alexus Reese (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 2nd. Senior outfielder Sarah Bowen (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) hit a sacrifice fly and Haefling also drew a bases loaded walk. Robinson had an RBI base hit, while Lovato and Matlock had back-to-back RBI walks to cap the scoring.
- Summers surrendered a leadoff single in the top of the 2nd, however she would only allow one runner after that.
Game Two
- Robinson was 3-for-5 and Morgan finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
- Junior pitcher Alyssa Frey (Sheboygan, Wis./Trinity International/Sheboygan South) made the start and threw 6.1 innings with eight hits, two runs, two walks and three strikeouts to finish with a no decision.
- Summers moved her record to 18-7 in the circle on the season and gave up just two hits in her outing out of the bullpen.
- A base hit by Morgan and a CCSJ error scored Carr to give SXU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd.
- Calumet St. Joseph tied the game in the top of the 3rd with an RBI single.
- Bowen lined an RBI single up the middle to put Saint Xavier back on top in the bottom of the 4th.
- The Crimson Wave tied the game with one out in the top of the 7th to chase Frey. Summers recorded back-to-back groundouts to force extra innings.
- CCSJ put two runners on in the top of the 10th with a pair of two-out singles, however Summers induced a comebacker to end the rally.
- Haefling led off the bottom of the 10th with a bloop single into left field. Robinson tapped a one-out base hit down the third base line that stayed fair after hitting the bag and Haefling was lifted for Stahulak. Lovato loaded the bases with an infield single to set up Matlock, who into a fielder's choice. The third baseman got the out at third, but Stahulak slid under the tag at home to come away with the thrilling victory.
Saint Xavier (29-12/16-3 CCAC) concludes the regular season with the resumption of the second game of their doubleheader with St. Ambrose University (Iowa) that was suspended in the bottom of the 1st due to lighting last Wednesday. The game will resume with runners on first and third with no outs at 2:00 pm.
