SXU Falls Twice on Day One of IU Kokomo Invite

Kokomo, Ind. – The Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (0-2, 0-0 CCAC) lost a pair of matches on day one of the Indiana University Kokomo Invite Friday afternoon in Kokomo, Ind. SXU lost its first match of the 2023 season to Indiana University East in three sets (18-25, 13-25, 18-25) and fell to Bethel University (Ind.) in three sets (14-25, 14-25, 20-25) in the second match of the day. Senior middle blocker Courtney Hunter (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) totaled 13 kills, six blocks (two solos) and four digs in both matches. Junior opposite hitter Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Lourdes/Blissfield), making her SXU debut, led the Cougars with a total of 14 kills, earning seven in both matches, along with seven digs and three blocks.

Match One:
  • Gentile had a team-best seven kills and added four digs and three block assists.
  • Hunter came away with four blocks (one solo), four kills and two digs.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Nicole Grochola (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) posted five kills on a .400 attack percentage (5-1-10) and had a pair of blocks.
  • Junior setter Kaleigh Ritter (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) recorded team-highs in assists with 10, digs with nine and two service aces.
  • Freshman setter Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central), making her collegiate debut, collected seven assists and six digs.
  • Freshman outside hitter Kaylee Born (Plainfield, Ill./Oswego East), also making her collegiate debut, had three digs and two kills.
Match Two:
  • Hunter registered a team-leading nine kills with two blocks (one solo) and two digs.
  • Gentile finished with seven kills and three digs.
  • Grochola added five kills and a dig, while Born had four kills and a dig.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Jenny Jensen (Orland Park, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/Sandburg) tallied five kills, three digs and a solo block in her Saint Xavier debut.
  • Opilka handed out a team-best 22 assists with six digs and a block.
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Ariel Hoskin (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) posted a team-high 11 digs and had a service ace.
  • Ritter recorded 10 digs, four assists and an ace.
Saint Xavier (0-2/0-0 CCAC) wraps up play at the IUK Invite with a match on Saturday, August 26 when they face Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) at 9:00 am central.
