Moreno Tallies Game-Winner, adds Assist in 3-2 Victory for SXU over MVNU

Mount Vernon, Ohio – Freshman midfielder Irving Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) scored his first collegiate goal at the 41st minute mark that prove to be the eventual game-winning goal for the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (1-0-2, 0-0 CCAC) in a 3-2 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) Saturday afternoon in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Moreno picked up his first collegiate point on an assist just two minutes earlier. He finished the matches with two shots on goal and played all 90 minutes while making his first collegiate start.
  • Senior midfielder Fernando Barragan (Burbank, Ill./Moraine Valley/Reavis) posted second goal of the season and had three shots on goal.
  • Freshman midfielder Saul Lagunas (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) registered his first collegiate goal on his lone shot attempt.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Osvaldo Ramirez (Chicago, Ill./Goode STEM Academy) earned his first collegiate victory in net after making seven saves for the visiting Cougars. He moves his record in goal to 1-0-1.
  • Barragan gave SXU an early lead by finding the back of the net in the 4th minute of action.
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene tied the match in the 11th minute on a setup from the midfielder.
  • Lagunas put Saint Xavier back on top with his first goal on the year off a pass from Moreno in the 39th minute.
  • Moreno extended the lead just two minutes later with the eventual game-winner.
  • The host Cougars turned up the pressure in the final 15 minutes, getting eight shot attempts off, before the cut the deficit to one with a goal in the 88th minute.
  • MVNU had one more shot attempt before SXU was able to pull away for their first win of the season.
Saint Xavier (1-0-2/0-0 CCAC) makes its way to Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on Cornerstone University (Mich.) on Wednesday, August 30. The match is scheduled for a 5:00 pm central start.
