Fernando Barragan (Burbank, Ill./Moraine Valley/Reavis) tallied the game-winning goal and added an assist for the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (3-1-4, 1-0 CCAC) in a 3-2 triumph over Indiana University Northwest in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action on a wet Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. It was the conference opener for both programs. Graduate student goalkeeper
Andres Zamora (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) earned the win in net (2-1-2) and posted a save for the Cougars.
- Senior midfielder Andy Lomeli (Dyer, Ind./Roosevelt/Valparaiso/Lake Central) finished with a team-leading five shot attempts and scored his first goal of the season.
- Sophomore midfielder Omar Aparicio (Chicago, Ill./Hancock College Prep) recorded two shot attempts and registered his first collegiate goal for SXU.
- Aparicio broke a scoreless tie in the 42nd minute when he laced a shot from 30 yards out off the crossbar that deflected past the goal line on a tick-tack-toe setup by Barragan and senior midfielder Bernardo Dominguez (Elgin, Ill./Rock Valley/Belvidere).
- IUN tied the match in the 70th minute off a free kick from 20 yards out into the lower left corner.
- Lomeli converted a penalty kick just over 30 seconds later in the 71st minute for his first goal of the season.
- Barragan extended the lead to 3-1 in the 81st minute on a nice pass from junior midfielder Nick Tamayo (Palos Park, Ill./North Central/Stagg).
- Zamora made a save on a penalty kick attempt in the 83rd minute, however the RedHawks cut into the lead by scoring a goal off a corner kick in the 84th minute.
Saint Xavier (3-1-4/1-0 CCAC) is on the road to play Viterbo University (Wis.) in CCAC competition on Wednesday, September 20. The match is slated for a 3:30 pm kickoff.
