Jonaitis Nets Game-Winner in 2-1 Victory for SXU over IUN

CHICAGO – Freshman forward Alex Jonaitis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) recorded the game-winning goal and added an assist for the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team (3-0-2, 1-0 CCAC) in a 2-1 victory in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play over Indiana University Northwest Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. It was the conference opener for both squads. Junior goalkeeper Eden Suda (Western Springs, Ill./Governors State/Lyons Township) made her first start in net for the Cougars and made six saves to earn the win.
  • Jonaitis finished the match with nine shot attempts and had three shots on goal.
  • Junior midfielder/forward Louisa Schreiber (Bonndorf, Germany/Morton/Hans-Thoma-Schule) scored a goal with three shot attempts and one shot on goal.
  • Junior forward Esmeralda Diaz (Chicago, Ill./Soloario Academy) added an assist with a shot attempt.
  • SXU outshot the RedHawks, 17-10, and made six saves to IUN's five.
  • Schreiber opened the scoring in the 29th minute off a free kick from Jonaitis. Jonaitis sent the ball in from near midfield and Schreiber headed the ball in from 15 yards out for her team-leading third goal of the season.
  • Jonaitis scored the eventual game-winner in the 37th minute on a setup by Diaz from 10 yards out. For Jonaitis, it was her second goal of the year, and it was the first assist of the season for Diaz.
  • Indiana Northwest cut the deficit in half after a breakaway goal in the 63rd minute.
  • Suda made three stops in the second half, including a big save in the 88th minute to keep Saint Xavier in the lead.
Saint Xavier (3-0-2/1-0 CCAC) travels to La Crosse, Wis. to play Viterbo University (Wis.) in CCAC action on Tuesday, September 19. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
