CHICAGO – After shooting just 25.0 percent (7-for-28) from the field in the first half and trailing 33-21 at the break, the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team (8-7, 7-2 CCAC) stormed back in the second half, shooting at a 62.5 percent clip (20-for-32) and outscoring University of St. Francis (Ill.) 47-21 in the final 20 minutes to come away with a 68-54 victory over the Fighting Saints in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup Wednesday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Jaidn Green (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) led all scorers with 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, along with five assists, four rebounds and a steal. It was the second time this season that Green recorded 20 or more points and had five or more assists.
- Sophomore center Eleanor Harris (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points (14 coming in the second half), eight rebounds, a career-high tying five blocks, a career-best four assists and four steals.
- Junior forward Alyssa Crenshaw (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) collected 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a pair of steals.
- Senior guard Bethany Baldwin (Watersmeet, Mich./Finlandia/Triton/Watersmeet) registered eight points, six rebounds, three steals, two steals and a block.
- Junior guard Aaliyahna Derrell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek) chipped in six points, two assists, two rebounds and a steal.
- The game started with a pair of technical foul shots made by Crenshaw. USF built a 16-11 advantage but the Cougars ended the frame with a three-pointer by Green off a pass from Harris and a jumper in the lane by Green set up by Harris to even the score, 16-16, after one quarter of action. St. Francis controlled the pace in the second period, outscoring SXU by a 17-5 margin. Saint Xavier was limited to 2-for-13 shooting (15.4 percent) in the quarter.
- The Cougars trailed 39-30 midway through the third quarter and went on a 9-1 run to retie the game at 40-40 with 3:43 left after Derrell split a pair of free throws. Sophomore guard Lia Chudzik (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) gave SXU a 45-44 lead after she knocked down a trey with :37 to go, their lead (11-10) at the 4:19 mark of the first quarter. USF tied the game, 45-45, with a foul shot to send the game all knotted up into the fourth period.
- Saint Xavier clamped down defensively in the final quarter, holding the Fighting Saints to 16.7 percent shooting (2-for-12) and forcing seven turnovers. The Cougars were 10-for-17 from the field (58.8 percent) and outscored St. Francis, 23-9. Harris scored eight points in the period on 4-of-5 shooting and blocked three shots.
Saint Xavier (9-7/7-2 CCAC) takes on Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a CCAC contest on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center on Saturday, January 20. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm tipoff.
