CHICAGO – Despite a pair of double-doubles from sophomore center

Aaliyahna Derrell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek), 11 points and 10 assists, the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team (9-8, 7-3 CCAC) lost 84-79 to Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday afternoon on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. The Cougars trailed 21-11 after the first quarter and by as many as 14 points, 27-13 early in the second period, before Derrell hit a half-court shot at the buzzer that cut the deficit to one, 36-35, at halftime.
SXU was unable to establish a lead by more than four points and a layup off a steal with 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Tigers the lead for good. A three-pointer by sophomore guard
Lia Chudzik (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) pulled Saint Xavier within two points, 77-75, with 1:27 left, however ONU closed out the game with free throws. Overall, the Cougars shot 50.8 percent from the field (33-for-65), but 28 turnovers proved too much to overcome.
- Harris led SXU in scoring while shooting 8-for-12. She also had four steals and blocked three shots.
- Derrell had a final line score of 11 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and six steals before fouling out.
- Junior forward Alyssa Crenshaw (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) scored 15 points, making 7-of-11 shot attempts. She added six rebounds (five offensive) and a pair of assists.
- Chudzik poured in a season-high 10 points while shooting at an 80.0 percent clip (4-for-5) along with an assist in 12 minutes off the bench.
- Senior guard Bethany Baldwin (Watersmeet, Mich./Finlandia/Triton/Watersmeet) came away with nine points, six rebounds, four steals, an assist and a block.
- Sophomore guard Jaidn Green (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) collected nine points, three assists and three rebounds.
- Junior guard Jenna Hernandez (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, finishing with six points and an assist in 13 minutes of action off the bench.
- Junior forward Sofie Carr (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) chipped in three assists, two points and two rebounds.
Saint Xavier (9-8/7-3 CCAC) travels to Elgin, Ill. to play Judson University (Ill.) in a CCAC contest on Wednesday, January 24. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 pm start.
