Double-Doubles Guide SXU in 69-67 Win over RU

CHICAGO – Junior forward Alyssa Crenshaw (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) led all scorers with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting (63.6 percent) and she pulled down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year and sophomore center Eleanor Harris (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and a game-best 11 rebounds to help lead the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team (7-6, 5-1 CCAC) to a 69-67 victory over Roosevelt University (Ill.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest Saturday afternoon on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Crenshaw was also 6-for-8 from the foul line with three assists and three steals, while Harris finished with three steals and a blocked shot. The duo corralled nine of the team's 14 offensive rebounds (Crenshaw – five, Harris – four) and the Cougars totaled 41 rebounds, the fifth time that they have had 40 or more rebounds in a game this season.
  • Junior guard Aaliyahna Derrell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek) tallied 16 points, two shy of tying her season-high, along with five rebounds, an assist and a steal. She also made 3-of-4 foul shots in the final minute to secure the win.
  • Junior guard Jenna Hernandez (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) was tough off the bench with 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. She also had three rebounds and two assists in a season-high 25 minutes.
  • Senior guard Bethany Baldwin (Watersmeet, Mich./Finlandia/Triton/Watersmeet) chipped in six points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
  • SXU held a 19-12 lead after the first quarter, limiting the Lakers to 27.3 percent (3-for-11) from the floor. Crenshaw scored the first four points of the game and had seven points in the opening frame. Saint Xavier went into halftime with a 32-27 advantage and Crenshaw was perfect from the field on three attempts in the second quarter and had 13 points for the half.
  • Roosevelt took its first lead of the game, 37-36, at the 6:52 mark of the third quarter on a layup. Harris scored on the next possession to regain the lead. The score remained close the rest of the period and Harris hit a buzzer-beating basket as time expired to end the third quarter and the Cougars went up 49-48 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Both teams shot 42.9 percent (6-for-14) in the final frame, however SXU was 7-for-8 from the foul line to RU's 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Crenshaw gave Saint Xavier its largest lead of the game, 64-53, on a layup off an assist from Baldwin with 4:11 to go in regulation. The Lakers chipped away and pulled within two points, 66-64, with under a minute left. Derrell sealed the win by making three of her four foul shot attempts in the closing seconds before Roosevelt sank a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Saint Xavier (7-6/5-1 CCAC) travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on No. 21 Indiana University South Bend in CCAC action on Wednesday, January 10. The game is slated for a 4:00 pm central start.
