Home Runs Power Saint Xavier in Series win over Ozarks

CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University baseball team (7-7/0-0 CCAC) concluded its Friday doubleheader Saturday morning after the game was suspended due to darkness after the third inning, with a 10-4 victory over College of the Ozarks. Junior Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles CC/Carbondale Community) belted a home run leading off the game on Friday and he added another home run in the bottom of the first in his first at-bat on Saturday. In game three of the series, the Bobcats triumphed with an 8-3 victory as fifth-year senior catcher Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) collected two RBI. SXU wrapped up the series with an 11-7 win in six innings as the game was called due to darkness in the bottom of the 6th and Massingale homered for the third time in the win.

Game Two:
  • Massingale finished 2-for-2 with three RBI, two home runs, two stolen bases and two walks.
  • Freshman infielder Troy Stukenberg (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) went 3-for-4 with four RBI, a double and a stolen base.
  • Junior outfielder Michael Flier (Greenup, Ill./Spoon River/Cumberland) was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double.
  • Sophomore infielder Jackson McFarland (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South Vigo) doubled twice in two at-bats with three runs scored, two walks, an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Redshirt junior pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) made the start on Friday and finished with a no decision. He threw 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and walking one batter.
  • Junior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) picked up the win in relief (2-1) as he started the resumed game on Saturday. He went 3.0 innings with five hits, three runs (all unearned), two walks and four strikeouts.
  • Freshman pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) made his collegiate debut in the top of the 7th. He gave up two hits and one run.
  • Massingale hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the 1st. McFarland hit an RBI double and he scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of junior infielder Konner Hutchings (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Charles CC/Liberty) for a 3-0 lead.
  • Massingale belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the 4th and Stukenberg laced a two-run single to left to extend the lead to 7-0.
  • Flier clubbed his first home run of the year to center in the bottom of the 5th.
  • Three unearned runs crossed the plate for Ozarks in the top of the 6th on a bases loaded walk and a two-run double.
  • Stukenberg slugged a two-run double to the gap in left center to make it 10-3 SXU.
  • CofO recorded a run in the top of the 7th on an RBI double.
Game Three:
  • Junior designated hitter Mason Johnson (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley/Quartz Hill) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Massingale went 2-for-3 as well with a run, a stolen base and a walk.
  • Orzech had a hit in three at-bats with an RBI.
  • Junior outfielder Kevin Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Murray State/Mount Carmel) was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a steal.
  • Junior pitcher Nico Saldias (Ajax, Ontario/Connors State/Pickering) took the loss (1-1) after the tossed 5.0 innings with seven hits, seven earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts.
  • Junior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) worked an inning and he allowed one hit, an unearned run and a walk.
  • Sophomore Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) logged an inning and he struck out two batters.
  • The Bobcats tallied four runs in the top of the 2nd off a two-run home run, an RBI double and an RBI single.
  • Orzech hit a two-run single back up the middle to cut the deficit in half, 4-2, in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • Ozarks added four more runs in the top of the 6th on a two-run double and a two-run single.
  • Johnson singled through the left side of the infield for an RBI in the bottom of the 6th.
Game Four:
  • Hutchings recorded three hits in four at-bats with three runs scored, two RBI and a double.
  • Johnson was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
  • Junior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
  • Massingale was 2-for-3 with two walks and a home run.
  • Dowling finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks, a double and an RBI.
  • Sophomore infielder Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Junior catcher Josh Cunniff (Plainfield, Ill./St. Charles CC/Plainfield Central) doubled and went 2-for-3.
  • Junior pitcher Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) earned the win (1-2) after he threw 5.0 innings. He surrendered six hits, seven runs (five earned), two walks and four strikeouts.
  • Senior pitcher Max Smyth (Tinley Park, Ill./Illinois Central/Andrew) picked up the save after he pitched 2.0 innings with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts when he entered with the bases loaded in the 5th inning.
  • Hutchings hammered a two-run double and Johnson connected for an RBI single to give Saint Xavier a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.
  • CofO responded with two unearned runs in the top of the 2nd on an RBI single and an error.
  • Massingale launched his third home run of the year in the bottom of the 2nd and Dowling scored on an error for a 5-2 advantage.
  • Johnson mashed his first home run as a Cougar, a two-run blast, to left field and Dowling hit a hustle double back up the middle for an RBI to push the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • The Bobcats added two runs in the top of the 4th on an RBI double and an RBI base hit.
  • Burns hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to go up 9-4.
  • An RBI hit-by-pitch and a two-run single for Ozarks cut the lead to 9-7 in the top of the 5th.
  • A pair of errors allowed freshman outfielder Nick Altobelli (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) to score after Hutchings hit a bunt single. Moore pulled an RBI single to right to cap the scoring.
  • Orzech drew his third walk of the game to load the bases in the bottom of the 6th before the game was called due to darkness.
Saint Xavier (7-7/0-0 CCAC) hosts Georgetown College (Ky.) for a three-game series at Ferrell Field that begins on Friday, March 8. Game one is scheduled for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
