Troy Stukenberg (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) scored the go-ahead runs in a five-run rally top of the 8
th in 10-8 victory in game two as Saint Xavier University baseball (21-18/14-8 CCAC) came away with a split in their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Wednesday afternoon at Modern Woodman Park in Davenport, Iowa. Logan McCleery (Patterson, Calif./Patterson) took the loss (5-3) after pitching 4.2 innings with seven hits, four runs (three earned), two walks and three strikeouts. Junior pitcher/infielder
Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee Crown) picked up the win (1-1) in relief in the second game, his first win as a Cougar, tossing 2.1 innings with just one hit allowed and one strikeout.
Game One:
- Junior infielder Mason Johnson (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley/Quartz Hill), junior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) and Stukenburg each finished 1-for-3.
- Fifth-year senior designated hitter Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) was 1-for-3 as well and he scored a run.
- Freshman infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) went 0-for-3 with an RBI.
- Parchomenko worked 1.1 innings out of the bullpen with one hit allowed and a pair of strikeouts.
- SAU struck first with two runs in the bottom of the 1st on an SXU error and a sacrifice fly.
- Dreier collected his 21st RBI of year off an RBI groundout in the top of the 4th.
- St. Ambrose pulled away in the bottom of the 5th with an RBI groundout and an RBI double.
Game Two:
- Orzech had two hits in five at-bats with three RBI and a run scored.
- Stukenberg finished 2-for-3, scoring three runs with a double, a hit-by-pitch and a walk.
- Freshman outfielder Nick Altobelli (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and an RBI double.
- Junior outfielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles CC/Carbondale Community) went 1-for-5 with two RBI and a steal.
- Moore tallied three runs while going 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and a double.
- Junior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) made his first start of the season, throwing 3.0 innings with five hits surrendered, four runs (three earned), a walk and two strikeouts.
- Senior pitcher Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) threw 2.2 innings of relief with just two hits, an unearned run, a walk and a strikeout.
- Freshman pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) worked an inning, giving up four hits and three earned runs.
- Massingale hit an RBI single back up the middle and he scored on a sacrifice fly off the back of Orzech. Dreier made it 3-0, laying down an RBI bunt single in the top of the 3rd.
- Orzech hit an RBI infield single to score Moore to extend the advantage to 4-0 in the top of the 4th.
- The Fighting Bees tied the game in the bottom of the inning, using a solo home run, an RBI base hit and fielder's choice, followed by an error.
- SAU took the lead in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single down the left field line.
- Altobelli lashed an RBI double down the line in left to re-tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the 7th.
- In the bottom of the 7th, St. Ambrose plated three runs with a two-out rally on a home run, an RBI double and an RBI single before Parchomenko came into the game a recorded a lineout to left.
- Johnson hit a single to lead off the top of the 8th to spark the five-run outburst. Massingale lifted an RBI sac fly, Orzech line an RBI base hit to center field, Stukenberg poked a two-run single through right side of the infield and he would score later in the frame on a wild pitch to make it 10-8.
- Parchomenko worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th and he allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the 9th before setting down the side in order to pick up the win.
Saint Xavier (21-18/14-8 CCAC) travels to Elgin, Ill on Friday, April 12 to play Judson University (Ill.) in a CCAC doubleheader. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
