Freshmen Fuel Comeback as SXU gains Split with RU

Crestwood, Ill. – Freshman infielder Troy Stukenberg (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) lined a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the 11th and freshman infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) sliced a two-run double to right field to provide some insurance to help give Saint Xavier University baseball (18-17/11-7 CCAC) a 7-3 victory in the second game of their doubleheader with Roosevelt University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Ozinga Field in Crestwood, Ill. in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup. Freshman outfielder Nick Altobelli (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) drove in a pair of runs in 6-5 setback to the Lakers in the first game.

Game One:
  • Junior outfielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles CC/Carbondale Community) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Junior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) was 2-for-4 with a run and a steal.
  • Stukenberg had a hit in three at-bats with an RBI.
  • Altobelli finished 1-for-2.
  • Junior infielder Mason Johnson (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley/Quartz Hill) collected a pair of hits in three at-bats with an RBI.
  • Sophomore pitcher Trent Markezich (Mount Olive, Ill./Mount Olive) made start going 4.1 innings with five hits, five runs (three earned), three walks and five strikeouts to fall to 0-3 this season.
  • Junior pitcher/infielder Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee Crown) threw 1.2 innings of relief, allowing three hits, one earned run, a walk and striking out three batters.
  • Stukenberg and Altobelli hit RBI singles in the top of the 1st.
  • RU tied the game in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI fielder's choice and an error.
  • Altobelli hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the 3rd to put SXU back up, 3-2.
  • Roosevelt plated four runs in the bottom of the 5th on a wild pitch, a two-run double and an RBI triple.
  • Johnson hammered an RBI base hit in the top of the 6th and Moore stole home in the top of the 7th with two outs but a groundout ended the game.
Game Two:
  • Altobelli had three hits in five at-bats, scoring a pair of runs and swiping a base.
  • Dreier and Stukenberg each went 1-for-5, coming through in the clutch in extra-innings.
  • Moore was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a double.
  • Junior pitcher Noah Scott (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) took the mound, going 6.0 innings, allowing just two hits with a run, two walks and a strikeout.
  • Senior pitcher Tzu-Chun Yen (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Ohlone/Meiho) worked 1.2 innings, scattering two hits with two earned runs, a walk and a strikeout.
  • Junior pitcher Logan Antrim (Effingham, Ill./Lincoln Land/St. Anthony) earned his second win in as many days (2-0), pithing 2.1 innings of relief with two hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
  • Sophomore pitcher Heath Mann (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) finished the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 11th and ended the contest with a strikeout.
  • Altobelli stole home in the top of the 2nd to give Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd.
  • The Lakers tied the game in the bottom of the 5th with an RBI single. They added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI double and an RBI base hit.
  • Massingale drove in a run on an RBI groundout and Moore tied the game, scoring on an error in the top of the 9th.
Saint Xavier (18-17/11-7 CCAC) returns to Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field to host Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Tuesday, April 9 for a CCAC doubleheader. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
