Altobelli Guides Saint Xavier to Sweep of Olivet Nazarene

CHICAGO – Freshman outfielder Nick Altobelli (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) totaled seven RBI on the day, including five in game one, to help lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team (20-17/13-7 CCAC) to a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader sweep of Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Tuesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Altobelli cracked a three-run home run and senior pitcher Julian Vargas (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) earned the win in a 16-3 victory in the first game. Altobelli and freshman infielder Troy Stukenberg (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) each collected two RBI and sophomore pitcher Heath Mann (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) came away with the win in relief as the Cougars took game two by a 9-7 score.

Game One:
  • Altobelli was 3-for-5 with five RBI, three runs scored and a double.
  • Freshman infielder Noah Dreier (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run home run.
  • Stukenberg went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.
  • Junior outfielder Justin Massingale (Carbondale, Ill./St. Charles CC/Carbondale Community) hit a solo home run in his only at-bat, scored three runs and he drew a pair of walks.
  • Sophomore utility Gannon Burns (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) hit his first collegiate home run and scored two runs.
  • Fifth-year senior designated hitter Evan Orzech (Shorewood, Ill./Crossroads Christian Academy) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks and an RBI.
  • Vargas (4-1) threw 4.0 innings to pick up the win in the seven-inning contest with five hits allowed, one earned run, two walks and a strikeout.
  • Freshman pitcher Garrett Benko (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) pitched an inning and gave up two hits.
  • Senior pitcher Ryan Martin (Whitestone, N.Y./Iona/St. Francis Prep) tossed an inning with one hit and a walk.
  • Junior pitcher Matt Boehm (Evergreen Park, Ill./Lewis/De La Salle) finished the game by going an inning, allowing a hit, two runs (both unearned) and a pair of walks.
  • Massingale hit a home run down the left field line and Altobelli belted a three-run home run to left to give SXU a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.
  • Dreier slugged a three-run home run over the wall in center to extend the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • A passed ball allowed junior infielder Mason Johnson (Palmdale, Calif./Antelope Valley/Quartz Hill) to score from third base and Stukenberg sliced an RBI single to push the advantage to 9-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • The Tigers got on the board in the top of the 4th off an RBI double.
  • Saint Xavier plated six runs in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI walk by Orzech, a two-run double off the bat of Altobelli, an RBI single by Dreier and an RBI sacrifice fly from junior pinch hitter Sebastian Parchomenko (Algonquin, Ill./Southwest Mississippi/Dundee Crown) to make it 15-1.
  • Burns connected for a home run in the bottom of the 6th.
  • ONU scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 7th on an RBI double and a sac fly.
Game Two:
  • Massingale had two hits in three at-bats with two runs, an RBI double and a walk.
  • Stukenberg was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Altobelli went 1-for-4 with a walk.
  • Junior outfielder Sean Moore (Chicago, Ill./Calumet St. Joseph/Thornwood) scored twice with an RBI, a stolen base and a walk despite going 0-for-4.
  • Senior pitcher Jimmy Fairley (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rock Valley/Huntley) made the start, pitching 5.0 innings and allowed just one hit with two runs (one earned) and three strikeouts.
  • Junior pitcher Tommy Dougherty (Alsip, Ill./South Suburban/Shepard) gave a hit, two runs (one earned) and a walk.
  • Mann (1-2) logged 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, giving up one hit, three earned runs, three walks and striking out four batters.
  • Senior pitcher Max Smyth (Tinley Park, Ill./Illinois Central/Andrew) earned his third save after tossing 2.0 innings with one hit, a walk and two strikeouts.
  • Olivet Nazarene took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a passed ball.
  • The Cougars tied the game in the next half inning on an RBI walk by Dreier.
  • Massingale pulled a two-run double down the left field line and Altobelli hit a two-run single to put SXU ahead 5-1 in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • The Tigers chipped away, getting a home run in the top of the 5th and two runs in the top of the 6th off of a double play and an error. They took the lead in the top of the 7th by scoring on a wild pitch, a passed ball on a dropped-third strike and another wild pitch.
  • SXU responded with a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning as an error on a sacrifice bunt allowed a run to score, Moore lifted a sacrifice fly and a two-run ground-rule double to center from Stukenberg.
  • After two outs, ONU had the go-ahead run at the plate after a walk and a basehit before Smyth rolled a groundout to end the contest.
Saint Xavier (20-17/13-7 CCAC) makes its way to Davenport, Iowa to face St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Wednesday, April 10 for a CCAC doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
