No. 7 SXU Men’s Volleyball Wins Twice on ‘Senior Day’

CHICAGO – The No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team (17-8/9-0 CCAC) came away with a pair of victories in the SXU Tri-Match Saturday afternoon on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. The Cougars defeated Viterbo University in three sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-14) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action in their first match of the day. SXU took down Cornerstone University (Mich.) later in the afternoon with a four-set triumph (21-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19).

Before the first match, Saint Xavier recognized three seniors from the team. Fifth-year senior middle blocker Drew Ehlers (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), senior middle blocker John Glennon (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and senior middle blocker Jake McClain (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist).

Match One:
  • McClain posted a season-best 15 kills with three blocks, two service aces and a dig.
  • Ehlers was efficient with nine kills on a .692 attack percentage (9-0-13), adding three blocks (one solo) and a dig.
  • Glennon collected three blocks, two kills and a dig.
  • Freshman setter Cameron Daniels (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) dished out 33 assists, along with two aces, two blocks (one solo), two digs and a kill.
  • Junior outside hitter Sean Carey (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) recorded eight kills, five digs, three service aces and a pair of blocks.
  • sophomore outside hitter Jan Lopuch (Krakow, Poland/I Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Sportowego) had eight kills on an .429 attack percentage (8-2-14) with four aces, four digs and an assist.
  • Sophomore libero Andres Velez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) was tough defensively, tallying a match-leading 13 digs and adding three assists.
Match Two:
  • Lopuch finished with a match-high 21 kills with four digs, two assists, two blocks and two service aces.
  • Carey also had double-digit kills with 12. He added an assist, a block and a dig.
  • Junior outside hitter Matt Pennala (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach City/St. John Bosco) registered nine kills, six digs, three assists and three blocks (one solo).
  • Fifth-year senior setter Christian Oviedo (Brea, Calif./Concordia-Irvine/Servite) handed out 35 assists with a dig and a solo block.
  • McClain tallied six kills on nine attempts, along with a block and a dig.
  • Ehlers had five kills, four blocks and a pair of digs.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Oskar Krzyzak (Nowy Sacz, Poland/Szkota Mistrzostwa Sportowego Rzeszów) came away with four kills, two aces, a block and a dig.
  • Daniels posted eight assists, five digs and two service aces.
  • Velez continued his tough defensive play by collecting 21 digs, his third 20-dig match this season, and he added three assists.
No. 7 Saint Xavier (17-8/9-0 CCAC) travels to Elgin, Ill. on Tuesday, April 9 to play Judson University (Ill.) in a CCAC contest. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
