Rio Grande, Ohio – The Saint Xavier University men's soccer team (0-1, 0-0 CCAC) dropped its 2024 season-opening match, 3-1, to No. 19 University of Rio Grande (Ohio) Thursday evening in the second match of the RedStorm Classic at Evan E. Davis Field in Rio Grande, Ohio. Sophomore midfielder
Aidan Breslin (Crestwood, Ill./Western Illinois/Shepard) scored the first goal of the season for the Cougars, and he finished with two shot attempts and one on goal in his SXU debut. URG held a 16-3 shot attempt advantage and out-shot Saint Xavier by an 8-1 margin in the first match of the season for both programs.
- Senior goalkeeper Joel Estrada (Chicago, Ill./Solorio Academy) started in net and he tallied five saves.
- Senior forward Pablo Guerrero (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) had the other shot attempt for the Cougars. He started the match and logged 69 minutes of action.
- The RedStorm struck first in the fifth minute of action for an early 1-0 lead.
- Just before halftime, Rio Grande added to its advantage in the 43rd minute and URG would score again just 46 seconds later in the 44th minute to go up 3-0.
- SXU made a rush before the halftime whistle when junior defender Jessie Cardiel (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) sent a ball in off a corner kick, however Saint Xavier couldn't capitalize.
- A foul and a yellow card in the 59th minute allowed Breslin to line the ensuing free kick past the URG goalkeeper.
- Estrada made a pair of saves in the second half and his defenders in front of him limited the RedStorm to just five shot attempts in the final 45 minutes of play.
Saint Xavier (0-1/0-0 CCAC) concludes play in the RedStorm Classic when they take on University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, August 24. The match is scheduled for a 12:30 central time kickoff at Davis Field in Rio Grande, Ohio.
