Late Goal by AQ Sinks SXU Men’s Soccer, 1-0, in Home Opener

CHICAGO – A goal by the visiting Aquinas College (Mich.) Saint in the 78th minute was the difference as Saint Xavier University men's soccer (0-3, 0-0 CCAC) lost 1-0 in its home opener Wednesday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Sophomore midfielder Aidan Breslin (Crestwood, Ill./Western Illinois/Shepard) led the Cougars with five shot attempts, and he had one shot on goal while playing all 90 minutes. The shot distribution was nearly even for both programs as AQ held a slight edge, 14-13. Both teams finished the match with four saves.
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Joel Estrada (Chicago, Ill./Solorio Academy) made four saves on the evening.
  • Senior midfielder Nick Tamayo (Palos Park, Ill./North Central/Stagg) had a team-best two shots on goal on both of his shot attempts.
  • Freshman midfielder Balys Zamalaitis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) had a pair of shot attempts with one shot on goal in 60 minutes of action off the bench.
  • Sophomore forward Irving Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) also had two shot attempts for SXU.
  • The match was scoreless in the first half as Estrada made three saves and Tamayo had two shots turned away.
  • The Saint scored on a rebounded shot that hit the crossbar off of a header attempt in the 78th minute.
  • Breslin lined a shot that went just high a little over a minute later and Zamalaitis had a chance in the closing seconds that was stopped.
Saint Xavier (0-3/0-0 CCAC) returns to action on Saturday, September 7 when they welcome Cornerstone University (Mich.) to Deaton Field. The match is slated for a 1:30 pm start.
