Hunter Hits Milestone; SXU Sweeps at TU Tournament

Upland, Ind. – Fifth-year senior middle blocker Courtney Hunter (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) tallied 15 kills to help lead the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (3-5, 0-0 CCAC) to a five-set victory over Huntington University (Ind.) (25-22 27-29, 25-17, 10-25, 16-14) in their first match at the Taylor University (Ind.) Tournament Saturday afternoon in Upland, Ind. and became just the 21st player in program history to record 1,000 or more kills. Hunter added 15 more kills on a stellar .444 attack percentage (15-3-27) as the Cougars took down the host Trojans in five sets (25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 15-8) to wrap up the tournament. The pair of victories extends SXU's winning streak to three in a row.

Match One:
  • Senior outside hitter Connie LeBel (Crestwood, Ill./DePaul/Ferris State/Mother McAuley) recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with a match-best 23 kills with 11 digs and a service ace.
  • Redshirt junior setter Samantha Hovey (Mackinaw, Ill./Heartland/Dee-Mack) paced the offense, handing out a season-best 58 assists. She was also tough defensively, coming away with 16 digs for her second double-double of the year. Hovey added a pair of kills and four service aces. Her last two aces won the match, breaking a 14-14 tie on back-to-back serves with a timeout sandwiched in-between.
  • Hunter added five digs, three blocks and an ace.
  • Junior middle blocker Nicole Grochola (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) collected a career-high 14 kills on a .385 attack percentage (14-4-26) and a career-best three solo blocks.
  • Senior outside hitter Abby Gentile (Blissfield, Mich./Lourdes/Blissfield) totaled 11 kills while adding three digs and a block.
  • Redshirt junior libero Avanna Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Ponceno) registered the second-most digs in her career, amassing 31. It was the third time that she has had 30 or more digs in a match in her time with Saint Xavier. Martinez also had four assists and a service ace.
  • Junior defensive specialist Katie DeHaan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) came away with a season-high 15 digs, while freshman libero Taylor Vann (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) scooped up 13 digs in the win.
  • Overall, the Cougars posted a season-high 95 digs, 68 kills, 65 assists and four solo blocks.
Match Two:
  • Gentile finished with a team-leading 18 kills for a new season-high on a .484 attack percentage (18-3-31) while adding a dig.
  • In addition to her 15 kills, Hunter had five blocks (one solo), two aces and an assist.
  • LeBel also finished in double-figures in kills with 14, along with 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. She added an assist and a block.
  • Freshman middle blocker Carrington Smith (Flossmoor, Ill./Marian Catholic) contributed six kills, two digs and a solo block.
  • Hovey registered another double-double on the afternoon with 30 assists and a season-best 17 digs. She also had three kills and a pair of aces.
  • Martinez tallied 16 digs with seven assists and a kill.
  • Sophomore setter Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) registered 17 assists and three digs.
Saint Xavier (3-5/0-0 CCAC) travels to South Bend, Ind. to play Indiana University South Bend in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action on Thursday, September 5. The match is slated for a 6:00 pm central start.
