Mauri Martinez (Chicago, Ill./Argo Community) added a goal in the second half, while redshirt junior goalkeeper
Joel Estrada (Chicago, Ill./Solorio Academy) tallied eight saves enroute to his third straight shutout to help lead Saint Xavier University men's soccer (1-6-3, 1-0-2 CCAC) to a 2-0 victory over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) contest Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. It was the first goals of the season for both Espinoza and Martinez, and Estrada recorded the assist on Martinez's goal to improve SXU's record to 1-0-2 in conference play and the give the Cougars their first triumph of the season.
- Senior midfielder Nick Tamayo (Palos Park, Ill./North Central/Stagg) led Saint Xavier with four shot attempts and he had one shot on goal in 74 minutes of action.
- Espinoza finished with two shot attempts and one shot on goal in 75 minutes on the pitch.
- Sophomore midfielder Aidan Breslin (Crestwood, Ill./Western Illinois/Shepard), sophomore forward Irving Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) and freshman forward Rodrigo Hernandez (Bridgeview, Ill./Stagg) each posted one shot on goal for SXU, respectively.
- A foul in the 18-yard box set up a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Espinoza sent the ball past the goalkeeper on a kick to the lower right corner to give the Cougars the advantage. The goal would prove to be the game-winner.
- In the 76th minute, Estrada sent a free kick downfield that Martinez corralled. After the St. Ambrose goalkeeper came out to challenge the ball, he left the net wide open which allowed Martinez to extend the lead to 2-0.
- Moreno had a penalty kick attempt in the 84th minute, however the Fighting Bees made a sub at goalkeeper and they saved the attempt.
Saint Xavier (1-6-3/1-0-2 CCAC) makes the short trip to Whiting, Ind. to play Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on Saturday, October 5. The match is slated for a 10:30 am kickoff.
