Avanna Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Ponceno) broke a program record that stood since 1996 by collecting 29 digs in a three-set victory (25-13, 28-26, 25-23) for the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (12-6, 10-3 CCAC) over Indiana University Northwest in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Thursday evening on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. Martinez broke the record for digs in a three-set match for the Cougars that was set by Joanne Cahill (1994-96), who tallied 27 digs vs. Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on November 13, 1996. It was the third straight match that Martinez came away with 29 digs and she now has a team-leading 401 digs on the season. Martinez added six assists and a service ace as SXU moves a half a game ahead of University of St. Francis (Ill.) for second place in the CCAC.
- Senior outside hitter Jenny Jensen (Orland Park, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/Sandburg) led Saint Xavier in kills for the second consecutive match, posting a match-high 13 kills. She added six digs, her second-highest total this year.
- Senior setter Samantha Hovey (Mackinaw, Ill./Heartland/Dee-Mack) just missed a triple-double, recording a match-best 27 assists and 12 digs for her 11th double-double in 2025. She also had nine kills and an ace.
- Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Delaney Panozzo (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) logged her second-best kill effort of the season, finishing with 10. She added three digs and a solo block.
- Senior middle blocker Nicole Grochola (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) registered eight kills and a solo block.
- Junior setter Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) dished out 13 assists, along with nine digs and a service ace.
- Sophomore middle blocker Carrington Smith (Flossmoor, Ill./Marian Catholic) tallied six kills, a dig and a solo block.
- Graduate student defensive specialist Katie DeHaan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) scooped up eight digs with two assists and an ace.
- Senior outside hitter Tara Glynn (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) had four kills and two digs, while sophomore libero/defensive specialist Taylor Vann (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) came away with a pair of digs and an assist.
Saint Xavier (13-6/11-3 CCAC) competes in the St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Tri-Match on Saturday, October 25 in Davenport, Iowa. The Cougars play the Fighting Bees in CCAC action at 1:00 pm, followed by a non-conference match vs. Columbia College (Mo.) scheduled for 3:00 pm.
