Davenport, Iowa – Entering the fourth quarter trailing 44-37, the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team (3-2, 1-0 CCAC) allowed only six points in the final frame, limiting St. Ambrose University (Iowa) to 2-for-14 shooting from the field and 1-for-8 from three-point range to rally for a 57-50 victory Wednesday evening in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener for both teams at the Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, Iowa. Veronica Bafia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) scored seven of her team-leading 13 points in the fourth period, scoring on back-to-back possessions to fuel a 13-1 rally in the opening minutes of the frame. Freshman guard
Julia Benjamin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) gave the Cougars the lead for good, 47-45, with a three-pointer with 6:53 left in regulation. Overall, Bafia recorded her first double-double of the season by adding 11 rebounds (five offensive), three assists and a blocked shot. Benjamin knocked down three of her five threes, going 4-for-6 form the floor for a career-high 11 points with a rebound in 15 minutes off the bench.
- Freshman guard Brooklynn Johnson (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) tallied 11 points, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the closing minute. She also had six rebounds and an assist.
- Freshman forward Alaina Peetz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) earned her first collegiate double-double, pulling down a career-high and game-best 15 rebounds (six offensive) and making 5-of-10 shots for 10 points. She added a career-high four steals and an assist.
- Senior guard Jaidn Green (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) collected six points, four rebounds, three assists and a block.
- Sophomore guard Makayla Kelly (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) drained a three-pointer during the fourth quarter rally, one possession before Benjamin's trey. She also had a rebound in 12 minutes off the bench.
- Junior guard Madyson Kibelkis (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) chipped in three points, a rebound and a steal in the win.
Saint Xavier (2-2/0-0 CCAC) starts Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) competition when they play St. Ambrose University (Iowa) on Wednesday, November 12. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 pm start.
