La Crosse, Wis. – The No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team (18-10, 14-4 CCAC) lost to top-seed and No. 17 ranked Viterbo University (Wis.) in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 14-25) in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Championship Saturday afternoon at Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse, Wis. It was the second consecutive season that the Cougars finished as the runner-up in the tournament, also losing to the V-Hawks in three sets in 2024. Fifth year senior libero
Avanna Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Ponceno) posted a team-high 28 digs, eight assists and two service aces. Martinez became just the eighth player in school history to surpass 600 or more digs in a season, now ranking No. 6 in single-season history with 626 digs.
- Senior setter Samantha Hovey (Mackinaw, Ill./Heartland/Dee-Mack) logged her 18th double-double of the year, finishing with a team-leading 21 assists and a team-high 11 kills. She added eight digs and a block.
- Sophomore middle blocker Carrington Smith (Flossmoor, Ill./Marian Catholic) came away with 10 kills, her fifth consecutive match with 10 or more kills and the sixth time in the last seven matches. She also had four blocks, her third straight match with four blocks, and a dig.
- Junior setter Abbey Opilka (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) posted her second consecutive double-double, and fifth of 2025, with 19 assists and 12 digs, along with two aces.
- Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Delaney Panozzo (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) registered nine kills, three digs and a block.
- Senior middle blocker Nicole Grochola (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) tallied eight kills on a .294 attack percentage (8-3-17).
- Senior outside hitter Jenny Jensen (Orland Park, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/Sandburg) had seven kills and a dig.
- Senior outside hitter Tara Glynn (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) totaled four kills, two blocks and a dig.
- Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Taylor Vann (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) added nine digs, while graduate student defensive specialist Katie DeHaan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) chipped in eight digs.
Saint Xavier (18-10/14-4 CCAC) will compete in the 2025 NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship Opening Round on Saturday, November 22. The Cougars will find out where they go, and whom they play on Monday, November 17, when the NAIA announces the pairings on its YouTube channel at 4:00 pm.
