CHICAGO – With 1:40 left in regulation, redshirt junior wide receiver
Mario Price (Chicago Heights, Ill./Calumet New Tech) caught a pass and raced to the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown, a 49-yard catch-and-run, to provide Saint Xavier University football (7-3, 3-1 MSFA Midwest) with a 21-14 victory over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League contest Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, Ill. Price finished the afternoon with a team-best 74 receiving yards on three receptions, along with a team-leading 58 rushing yards on 19 carries. The Cougars rushed for 121 yards on the day, totaling 309 yards of total offense. The SXU defense limited ONU to 225 yards of total offense, and tallied a pair of interceptions.
- Senior quarterback Dominic D'Ambrosio (Oak Forest, Ill./Andrew) was 13-for-21 for 188 passing yards with two touchdown passes. He also added 15 carries for 37 yards.
- Senior wide receiver Marquel Porter (Calumet Park, Ill./DuPage/Richards) had three receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
- Fifth year senior wide receiver Ronnie Foster (Peoria Heights, Ill./Peoria Heights) caught two passes for 56, including a touchdown.
- Redshirt freshman wide receiver Kameron Hopkins (Bolingbrook, Ill./Minooka Community) led Saint Xavier with seven catches for 54 yards.
- Freshman kicker Christian Casillas (Alsip, Ill./Eisenhower) made a pair of field goals, from 29 and 33 yards, respectively.
- Senior linebacker Terry Elias Jr. (Monee, Ill./Crete-Monee) came away with a team-leading 10 tackles (two solos) with an interception returned for 16 yards and 0.5 sacks for five yards.
- Senior linebacker Chris Swayne (LaSalle, Ill./LaSalle-Peru Township) tallied eight stops (three solos) with a sack for two yards, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
- Senior defensive lineman Justin Yeazell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) had eight tackles (two solos) with 2.0 tackles for loss for 10 yards, two quarterback hurries, a sack for eight yards and a pass breakup.
- Junior defensive back Asael Rubalcava (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) recorded six tops (two solos) with a pass breakup and 0.5 tackles for loss.
- Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman David Burton (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) also had six tackles (three solos) with a QB hurry and 0.5 tackles for loss for a yard.
- Elias Jr. intercepted a pass on the first play of the game for the Tigers, however Olivet Nazarene forced a fumble two plays later. The drive stalled out after freshman defensive lineman Evan Borkenhagen (Manteno, Ill./Manteno Community) blocked a 39-yard field goal attempt.
- The Cougars took over and march 71 yards on 14 plays, using up 7:20 off the game clock, wrapping up the drive with a 29-yard field goal by Casillas to start the second quarter.
- SXU forced a three-and-out, taking the ball at their own 34 after the punt. D'Ambrosio found Foster for a touchdown form 28 yards out to finish the nine play, 66-yard drive with 9:07 remaining in the half.
- Saint Xavier scored on its third straight possession going 53 yards on 12 plays with Casillas booting a 33-yard field goal to extend the lead to 13-0 with 41 seconds left before halftime.
- The Tigers took their opening drive to start the second half and scored on a seven-yard touchdown pass after using eight plays to go 68 yards with 10:06 to go.
- A blocked punt by ONU set them up at the Cougar seven-yard line, and they scored one play later to take a 14-13 lead on another seven-yard touchdown pass.
- On the eventual winning drive, SXU started at its own 31. They would earn a first down at the 42, but a sack and a 15-yard penalty pushed them back to their own 20. On second and 32, D'Ambrosio connected with Price over the middle for a 21-yard gain to setup a third and 11.
- A pass to Hopkins gained 10, and on fourth and one D'Ambrosio took advantage of a penalty as Olivet Nazarene has 12 players on the field. He threw a pass to Price, who raced into the end zone to regain the lead at 19-14.
- Saint Xavier went for the two-point conversion that senior linebacker Carter Wynn (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) rumbled into the end zone for the conversion.
- A penalty on the kickoff put the Tigers at their own 40-yard line. They would get down to the SXU two-yard line with six seconds left, however a penalty by ONU forced a 10-second runoff to give Saint Xavier the victory.
Saint Xavier (7-3/3-1 MSFA Midwest) celebrated 'Senior Day' at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field on Saturday, November 15 before they take on No. 7 Marian University (Ind.) with a share of the MSFA Midwest League title on the line. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
